Tata Martino’s Return: Atlanta United Home Opener vs. RSL – 2026 Season

Tata Martino’s Return: Atlanta United Home Opener vs. RSL – 2026 Season

March 7, 2026 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor News

ATLANTA – After a challenging start to the 2026 Major League Soccer season, Atlanta United returns to Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, March 7th, to face Real Salt Lake at 7:30 p.m. ET. The match marks the highly anticipated return of Tata Martino to the 5-Stripes’ sideline for the first time since 2018.

The home opener carries particular significance for one Atlanta United supporter group, the 17s, who will be reunited with Martino after a long wait. The team is coming off two consecutive losses to begin the season, and a return to their home pitch is seen as a crucial opportunity to reset and build momentum.

Martino acknowledged the importance of the match extends beyond his personal return. “For us, for the fans, for the club, it’s a game of great importance,” he said in Spanish after training on Thursday. He recognizes the power of the Atlanta United supporters at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a venue he knows well from his previous tenure and as a visiting coach with Inter Miami.

Several players will experience their first game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, including offseason acquisition Elías Báez. “We have to try to come out with a positive mindset, that at home [the opponent] doesn’t come anywhere near us,” Báez stated after training on Tuesday, reflecting the team’s determination to establish a strong home-field advantage.

Beyond the tactical adjustments, players emphasize the importance of mental fortitude. “We know we are good quality players, but we need mental strength,” said Saba Lobjanidze after Tuesday’s training session. “We know the way to coming back, and we have to win the game. What we have is the good thing. We have a home game, and it’s a perfect opportunity.”

Defender Enea Mihaj echoed that sentiment, stressing the need for visible effort and commitment. “They are the best fans in MLS for me, and they deserve more from us,” Lobjanidze added. Mihaj believes that demonstrating a relentless fight for every ball will ignite the crowd and transform them into the team’s “12th player.”

Tactically, Martino may have a new option in midfield with the recent loan signing of Matías Galarza from River Plate. Martino described Galarza as someone who “can do a number of different things that we think is going to help the team,” and noted his competition with the existing midfield group.

The addition of Galarza could be key to Martino’s desire for Atlanta United to control possession. He explained that Real Salt Lake’s direct style of play and quick transitions necessitate maintaining control of the midfield. Defensively, the 5-Stripes will need to be disciplined and win individual matchups when possession is lost.

Mihaj highlighted the importance of smart defending, including “distance, smart decisions, not losing the ball and trying to make smart tactical fouls to prevent the transition.”

The team understands the need to deliver a positive result for their supporters. “From my experience in football until now, [there’s] only one thing you can do to make the crowd [get loud]: when they see a player fight,” Mihaj said. “It really is not about dribbling or shooting, but when [they] see that you sacrifice yourself for the team. In this moment, the crowd they come next to you and they become the 12th player.”

A win on Saturday would provide a significant boost as Atlanta United embarks on a four-match homestand, aiming to build positive energy and momentum early in the season.
