Get ready to pay more for your next ride. Taxi fares across the country‍ have increased by 9% ⁣starting today, hitting passengers right as holiday celebrations kick into high gear.

The National Maximum Taxi Fare hike will impact all time bands and distances, meaning no matter when‍ or where you hail a cab, expect to shell out more. Pre-booking a taxi will also cost you more, with the fee jumping from $2 to $3.

Adding to the sting, the “special rate” for late-night ⁢rides during holidays will⁤ now be in effect year-round. the National Transportation authority (NTA) says this extended “special ‍rate” is designed to encourage more drivers to ⁢work⁤ during peak nighttime hours, supporting the night-time economy.

Rising⁣ Costs Drive the Increase

A recent NTA review found that the overall cost ⁢of operating a taxi increased by 9% to 11% ‍between⁢ 2022 and 2024. This surge in expenses, driven by ⁤factors like fuel prices and vehicle maintenance, has made it necessary to raise fares to ensure drivers can continue to operate and attract ⁤new talent to the industry.

More Than Just Fares⁢ Needed, Says Industry Leader

Danny‍ O’Gorman, General manager of FREENOW Ireland, believes that while the fare increase is necessary, its not enough to fully⁣ support taxi drivers.

“It is becoming increasingly expensive ‍to buy and operate a taxi,” O’Gorman said. “the fare increase is necessary to ⁣ensure existing drivers can continue to operate their ⁢taxis and for the sector to remain attractive to new drivers.”

However, he stressed that more needs to be done to address safety concerns that⁢ are making drivers hesitant to work certain hours.

FREENOW, along with other industry representatives,⁤ has ⁢called on election candidates to implement measures that support the taxi industry. ‍These include a dedicated Garda Helpline for drivers, ensuring Ireland’s regulatory standards and safety protocols are upheld, and ⁤requiring operators to invoice drivers from within Ireland to avoid VAT liabilities.

Passenger Perks⁤ Amidst⁢ the Price Hike

To help offset the impact⁣ on passengers, FREENOW has introduced FREENOW PLUS, a subscription ‍service offering discounts on taxi rides. They’ve also implemented the Airport Prebook Promise, guaranteeing‍ compensation for delays or cancellations.
