Fritz: ‘I feel I belong’ in the Top 5

Taylor Fritz, an American tennis player, made big strides in 2024. He reached his first major final at the US Open and competed in the Nitto ATP Finals, finishing the season ranked No. 4. In the final in Turin, he lost to Jannik Sinner in straight sets.

Fritz reflected on his progress, saying, “It’s been a really good week for me. Obviously, it’s a good way to end the year. It gives me a lot of confidence.” He compared his current feelings about his ranking to past experiences when he felt out of place in the Top 5. “Now I’m ranked where I’m at. I feel like I belong,” he stated.

In the Nitto ATP Finals, Fritz defeated notable players like Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, and Alex de Minaur. He became the first American to reach this final since James Blake in 2006. However, he struggled against Sinner, who had previously beaten him in the round-robin stage.

Fritz praised Sinner, noting his strong serve: “He served absolutely lights out. So many lines. He placed the serve great.” Sinner had a 71% first serve percentage.

Fritz is set to end his season at the Davis Cup Finals next week. He holds a 52-23 record this year. He identified areas for improvement, such as increasing his speed and footwork, particularly during returns. He acknowledged he struggled with his backhand when the balls wore out, which allowed Sinner to control the match.

Fritz won titles in Delray Beach and Eastbourne in 2024. Looking to the future, he aims to improve his performance against top-ranked players. He currently has a 0-11 record against World No. 1 players but leads a group of five Americans in the Top 25 as they prepare for the 2025 season.
