Manchester, England – Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed surprise at the resilience shown by Austrian side St. Pölten in their Champions League clash at the Etihad Stadium.Despite a comfortable 3-0 victory for the Premier League champions, Guardiola acknowledged the Austrian team’s spirited performance.
“They made it very tough for us,” Guardiola admitted after the match. “St. Pölten were well-organized and fought hard for every ball. We had to be patient and work hard to break them down.”
The Austrian side, making their Champions League debut, frustrated City for much of the first half with a disciplined defensive display. City eventually broke the deadlock through a stunning free-kick from Kevin De Bruyne just before halftime.
Goals from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden in the second half sealed the victory for City, but Guardiola was quick to praise St. Pölten’s effort.
“They showed great character and never gave up,” he said. ”It was a good test for us, and we learned a lot from the game.”

Manchester, England – Manchester city manager gareth Taylor is expecting a tough test when his side faces Austrian champions St. Pölten in the Champions League on Wednesday.
City secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory in the reverse fixture back in October, with Mary Fowler’s late header proving decisive. Despite City’s perfect record in Group D,securing their place in the quarterfinals,Taylor insists there are no easy games in Europe’s premier club competition.
“I learned there are no easy games in the Champions League nonetheless of what you see previously on paper,” Taylor said,reflecting on the October encounter. “Particularly an away fixture like that was a bit of an eye-opener.”
The City boss acknowledged the challenges his young squad faced in Austria, noting the meaningful number of changes made during the match.
“There were a lot of learnings from that game, without a doubt,” Taylor admitted. “To be honest there were perhaps too many changes in that game and had to get some personnel on to the pitch.We are a very young team, but we had an exceptionally young team that night, academy players playing in those types of games is a big ask.”
Despite the difficulties, Taylor praised his team’s resilience and highlighted Fowler’s crucial contribution.
“I was really impressed with the way the game returned,” he said. “I remember Mary Fowler scoring in that game and again at the weekend,she’s starting to play some really good football at the moment.”
City will be looking to maintain their winning streak and build momentum ahead of the knockout stages when they welcome St. Pölten to the Academy Stadium on Wednesday.
