Police have identified the human remains discovered May 14 in Watch Hill, a coastal community in Westerly, R.I., near Taylor Swift’s residence, as those of Eric Wein, 31, of Massachusetts. The South Kingstown Police Department confirmed the identification, bringing closure too the missing person case.
Wein had been reported missing April 18. His vehicle was located in South Kingstown April 10, prior to the missing person report, according to police.
Authorities stated that no foul play is suspected in Wein’s death, and the investigation has been closed. the case drew attention due to its proximity to Swift’s property and amid heightened concerns about a possible New England serial killer.
The Westerly discovery occurred three weeks after an unidentified body was found in the Seekonk River in Pawtucket, R.I., approximately 48 miles away. Despite the timing, Westerly Police Chief Paul Gingerella dismissed any connection to serial killer fears that have circulated online.
The discovery of Wein’s remains contributed to unease in New England, where 13 bodies have been found in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island as march. the victims ranged in age from 25 to 44, and included both men and women.
However, families of some victims, like that of Michele Romano, have refuted any link to a serial killer. Romano’s body was found in Foster, R.I., about 49 miles from Westerly, in March.
Gingerella attributed the serial killer fears to social media, though he acknowledged its benefits. The investigation into Wein’s death is now closed,with authorities extending condolences to his family.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Wein’s family and loved ones during this tough time,” police said in a news release.
