Pop superstar Taylor Swift has taken legal steps to protect her voice and likeness from unauthorized use in artificial intelligence (AI) deepfakes, filing trademark applications for specific audio clips and an iconic stage image. The filings, submitted on April 24, 2026, by Swift’s management company, TAS Rights Management, mark a growing trend among celebrities seeking legal safeguards against AI-generated impersonations.

Trademark Applications Target AI Misuse

The applications include two sound marks featuring Swift’s voice: one where she says, Hey, it’s Taylor Swift, and you can listen to my new album, ‘The Life of a Showgirl,’ on demand on Amazon Music Unlimited, and another where she states, Hey, it’s Taylor. My brand new album ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ is out on October 3, and you can click to presave it so you can listen to it on Spotify. The third filing covers a visual trademark—a photograph of Swift performing onstage during her Eras Tour, wearing a multicolored iridescent bodysuit, silver boots, and holding a pink guitar with a black strap.

Trademark attorney Josh Gerben, who first reported the filings on his blog, explained that the move could provide Swift with broader legal protection beyond existing right-of-publicity laws. By registering specific phrases tied to her voice, Swift could potentially challenge not only identical reproductions but also imitations that are ‘confusingly similar,’ a key standard in trademark law, Gerben wrote. He added that protecting a distinctive visual element, such as Swift’s signature bodysuit and pose, could strengthen her legal arguments against AI-generated images that evoke her likeness.

AI Deepfakes Drive Legal Action

Swift’s decision follows a surge in AI-generated content using her image and voice without consent. In recent years, deepfakes have included fabricated political endorsements, explicit images, and misleading advertisements. During the 2024 U.S. Presidential election, former President Donald Trump shared AI-manipulated images falsely depicting Swift supporting his campaign. Other instances have involved fake commercials and sexually suggestive content circulating online.

The filings align with a broader industry shift as celebrities seek legal tools to combat AI misuse. Actor Matthew McConaughey became the first major star to pursue similar protections earlier in 2026, securing eight trademark registrations for his voice and likeness. McConaughey emphasized the need for clear perimeters around ownership with consent and attribution as the norm in an AI world, according to a January 2026 interview with The Wall Street Journal.

Legal Experts Weigh In on Effectiveness

While trademark law traditionally protects brands and commercial identities, its application to AI-generated content remains untested. Gerben noted that Swift’s strategy could set a precedent for other public figures facing similar threats. This is part of a larger shift in how celebrities are using trademark law to fight AI, he said. However, legal challenges may arise if AI-generated content does not directly replicate the trademarked material but instead mimics Swift’s voice or appearance in a way that evokes her identity.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has not yet approved Swift’s applications, and her representatives have not commented publicly on the filings. If granted, the trademarks would join a growing arsenal of legal tools celebrities are deploying to control their digital likenesses in an era of rapidly advancing AI technology.
