Taylor Swift’s Politics: A Cynical Ploy or Genuine Activism
Taylor Swift’s Silence on Kamala Harris Endorsement Sparks Debate
Taylor Swift’s decision not to publicly endorse Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has raised eyebrows, with some arguing that the pop star is growing “cynical” and that her involvement in politics may be just another fleeting moment.
Daniel Daddario, a senior correspondent for Variety, noted that Swift’s silence on the White House race is unusual, given her past vocal support for Democratic candidates. “The idea that she will remain silent makes it seem cynical that she has spoken out in the past when it was more convenient,” D’Addario wrote.
Swift has a history of speaking out on politics, having endorsed two Democratic candidates in Tennessee in 2018 and Joe Biden in 2020. Her album “Lover,” released in 2019, also contained lyrics that seemed to support LGBTQ issues.
However, Swift has remained quiet on the White House race, even as she has been spotted hanging out with Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes had liked one of Donald Trump’s Instagram posts in August, prompting the former president to thank her.
Swift’s silence has sparked debate, with some arguing that she has a responsibility to speak out on politics. ”There is little that the world’s most famous performers do without intention and forethought,” D’Addario wrote. “Her Eras Tour is set to continue through December, after the election. It’s not unreasonable to think that Swift’s comments about a fierce race might have some element of risk attached to them.”

Swift has previously spoken out on politics, including in her 2020 feature-length documentary “Miss Americana.” However, D’Addario argued that her decision to explore political issues came at a time when her career was “very fluid.” Now, as one of the biggest artists in recording history, Swift may be more cautious about speaking out on politics.
Swift may yet voice her support for Harris, but for now, her silence has sparked debate about the role of celebrities in politics. As D’Addario noted, “In some ways, Swift seems to have a greater responsibility to speak out than other celebrities. Maybe she could argue that she has a responsibility to remain silent.”
