Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of the world’s largest IT services firms, is facing a severe crisis at its Nashik BPO unit following a police sting operation that uncovered allegations of sexual harassment, mental abuse, and forced religious conversion.
The investigation has led to the arrest of seven employees, including a senior HR manager, and the filing of nine first information reports (FIRs). The company has responded by suspending the accused employees pending further inquiry.
Undercover Police Operation
The Nashik City Police launched a covert operation in February 2026 after receiving a tip-off regarding suspicious workplace conduct. The initial report concerned a Hindu woman in her early 20s who had allegedly begun following Islamic practices due to influence at the workplace.
In response, police deployed undercover personnel, including women officers, to work inside the 147-employee facility. These officers posed as housekeeping staff for several weeks, monitoring daily interactions and reporting their observations back to senior investigators.
This surveillance provided the foundation for the current legal actions, as investigators described the operation as a well-laid plan
that corroborated the initial reports of coercion and harassment.
Allegations of Harassment and Coercion
Eight women employees have alleged that they were subjected to sexual and mental harassment by senior colleagues over a period of time. The complaints filed with the police include specific accusations of stalking, groping, and molestation.
Beyond sexual abuse, the victims alleged they faced pressure linked to religious practices and forced conversion. Some reports indicate that employees were allegedly forced to offer namaz and eat beef.
Police sources have further described the behavior of the accused as acting like an organised gang
specifically targeting female colleagues within the BPO unit.
Corporate Response and Internal Failures
A central component of the investigation focuses on the failure of the company’s internal reporting mechanisms. Investigators stated that the HR department was accused of ignoring repeated complaints raised by the employees regarding the abuse.
TCS has since issued a statement regarding its internal policies and the steps taken following the police action.
TCS has a long-standing zero-tolerance policy towards harassment and coercion of any form. We have always ensured the highest standards of safety and well-being of our employees at the workplace. As soon as we were made aware of the matter in Nashik, we took swift action.
TCS Company Spokesperson
The company confirmed that those currently under investigation have been suspended and that the firm is cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies.
Current Legal Status
The case is currently being handled by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the police. The SIT is investigating the financial links and the role of the alleged mastermind behind the coercion schemes.
- Seven employees, including a senior HR official, have been arrested.
- Nine FIRs have been registered based on the evidence gathered during the undercover operation.
- The investigation remains ongoing to determine the full extent of the harassment and coercion within the Nashik facility.
