TD Paul Murphy Joins Gaza Aid Flotilla
Irish Politician Joins International Flotilla to Break Gaza Blockade, Citing “Obligation” to Aid Starving Population
Barcelona, Spain & Dublin, Ireland – As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy has announced his participation in an international flotilla aiming to break Israel’s naval blockade and deliver vital aid to the region. Murphy stated he felt an “obligation” to join the effort,emphasizing the urgent need to address the “Israeli created famine” and open a humanitarian corridor for food and medical supplies.The frist wave of the Samud Flotilla departed from Barcelona on Sunday, drawing a crowd of thousands who waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans like “Free Palestine” and “It’s not a war, it’s a genocide.” Among those present were Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg and Irish actor liam Cunningham, demonstrating the broad international support for the mission.
Murphy is scheduled to depart for Tunis later this week, where he will join the rest of the humanitarian fleet. He highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, stating that “over 60,000 people have been killed and over 200 journalists have been assassinated to stop the truth getting out.”
Beyond delivering aid,Murphy emphasized the flotilla’s goal to “highlight our own western governments’ complicity.” He criticized the Irish government for what he sees as a lack of decisive action,despite acknowledging the situation as a genocide. He specifically pointed to the government’s handling of the Occupied Territories Bill and the Central Bank’s authorization of Israeli war bond sales.
This is not Murphy’s first time participating in such an effort. He was part of a flotilla in 2011 during his time as an MEP and was previously detained by Egyptian authorities near the Rafah crossing while participating in the
