Gretchen Walsh Soars to 50m Butterfly Gold at World Aquatics Championships
Gretchen Walsh of the United States has once again claimed the top spot in the women’s 50-metre butterfly, securing a gold medal at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore on Saturday, August 2, 2025. this victory marks her second world championship title in the event, a triumphant return to form after a challenging week for the American team.
Walsh’s Triumph Amidst Team Challenges
Walsh expressed her relief and joy after the race, stating, “It feels great to be like myself again in the water after kind of a rocky week.” She was referring to the bout of acute gastroenteritis that affected several members of the American contingent, stemming from a training camp in Thailand. Despite the adversity, Walsh’s performance showcased her resilience and determination. “Two-time world champion. Can’t complain with that,” she added, beaming with pride.
Dominant Performances across Events
The championships also saw strong showings from other international swimmers. Cameron McEvoy of Australia, the reigning Paris Olympic 50-meter freestyle champion, successfully defended his world title in the 50-meter butterfly with an remarkable time of 21.14 seconds. Ben Proud of Great Britain earned the silver medal with a time of 21.26, while American jack alexy secured the bronze, touching the wall at 21.46 seconds.
In the women’s 200-meter backstroke, Australian Kaylee McKeown, the defending champion and world-record holder, continued her dominance by winning gold with a time of 2:03.33. The United States had a strong presence on the podium in this event as well, with Regan Smith taking home her fourth silver medal of the championships in 2:04.29,followed by her teammate Claire Curzan who claimed the bronze in 2:06.04.
Maxime Grousset of France celebrated his second gold medal of the championships, winning the men’s 100-meter butterfly in 49.62 seconds. His performance was just shy of the world record set by American Caeleb Dressel at 49.45 seconds.Noe Ponti of Switzerland secured the silver medal in 49.83, and Canadian Ilya Kharun took the bronze in 50.07 seconds. Grousset had previously clinched gold in the 50-meter butterfly.
