Tech Giants Under Fire: Samsung and Xiaomi Accused of Colluding with Amazon to Crush Competition in India
Indian Antitrust Investigation Reveals Collusion Between Smartphone Manufacturers and E-commerce Companies
Reuters reported on the 14th local time that smartphone manufacturers operating in India, such as Samsung Electronics and Xiaomi, colluded with e-commerce companies such as Amazon to violate local antitrust laws.
The Competition Commission of India, India’s antitrust investigative agency, conducted an investigation into Amazon and Indian e-commerce company Flipkart in 2020. The report revealed that the Indian branches of five companies, including Samsung Electronics, Xiaomi, Motorola, Realme, and One Plus, launched their products exclusively through the Amazon India website.
This practice is against the interests of consumers as well as fair and free competition, as some sellers provide deep discounts on their products at the expense of other companies. The report highlights the need for fair competition in the Indian e-commerce market.
According to local market research, Samsung Electronics Korea and Xiaomi China have a significant market share of 36% in India. The investigation’s findings have sparked concerns about the impact of collusion on the Indian e-commerce market.
Market Impact and Consumer Concerns
The exclusive launch of products on Amazon India has raised concerns about the lack of competition in the market. Consumers may be affected by limited choices and higher prices due to the absence of fair competition.
The investigation’s report has not been commented on by smartphone makers, Amazon, Flipkart, and other companies involved. The outcome of the investigation is expected to have significant implications for the Indian e-commerce market.
