The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have added veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to their roster, injecting experience into a quarterback room led by Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask. The move, announced this week, signals the team’s intent to thoroughly evaluate its options at the position as it prepares for the 2024 season. General manager Jason Licht emphasized the value of experience, stating,”In that room – the more experience, the better.”
Bridgewater Brings a Decade of NFL Experience to Tampa Bay
Bridgewater, a former first-round pick, has played for six NFL teams – the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, New york Jets, Carolina Panthers, denver Broncos, and Miami Dolphins – amassing a 33-32 record. Throughout his career, he’s thrown for 15,120 yards and 75 touchdowns, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2017 with the Vikings after an 11-5 season.
His arrival isn’t just about on-field statistics. Bridgewater’s leadership and understanding of the game are highly valued. While he recently retired from the NFL to coach his high school alma mater, Miami Northwestern, to a state championship, the opportunity to potentially contribute to the Buccaneers proved too appealing.
The Buccaneers currently have Baker Mayfield firmly established as the starter, but the competition for the backup role is now heating up. Kyle Trask, selected by Tampa Bay in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft, has been designated as the current backup. However, Licht made it clear that all positions are open for competition.
“We still have preseason games to play and all that, but right now Kyle is our backup,” Licht saeid. “That’s the intention and that’s what we’re hoping for. But yeah, everybody’s competing.”
Bridgewater’s presence adds another layer to this competition. He received first-team reps during training camp last week while Mayfield was sidelined with an injury, offering a glimpse of his potential role. The team is weighing whether to carry three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster or keep a third on the practice squad.
Familiar Faces and Connections in Tampa Bay
Bridgewater’s connection to the Buccaneers extends beyond the field. He has established relationships with key members of the coaching staff. He previously played under new Buccaneers defensive line coach Charlie Strong at Louisville. he also spent time with new offensive coordinator Josh grizzard during their tenure with the Miami Dolphins in 2022, where Grizzard served as the offensive quality control coach.
Perhaps most notably, Bridgewater is a former teammate of longtime Buccaneers defensive captain Lavonte David at Miami Northwestern High School. This shared history adds a personal dimension to his arrival in Tampa Bay.
“Oh man, it’s just crazy, man,” David said recently regarding Bridgewater’s recent suspension from his high school coaching position. “Just knowing the type of person Teddy is… he’s just doing it straight out of love. even when he was in the league, he was still giving back to the team. It just so happened that he be the head coach. He gives a lot back to youth football.”
Addressing Recent Suspension and Looking Ahead
Bridgewater was recently suspended from his coaching position at Miami Northwestern for allegedly providing impermissible benefits to players, including covering expenses for Uber rides, meals, and recovery services. He self-reported the violations, acknowledging his desire to support his players. While the suspension is a recent development, David expressed confidence in Bridgewater’s character and ability to navigate the situation.
The Buccaneers’ decision to bring in Bridgewater demonstrates a commitment to building a competitive quarterback room. as the preseason unfolds, the battle for the backup role will undoubtedly be one to watch, with Bridgewater bringing a wealth of experience and a network of connections that could prove invaluable to the team’s success.
