Shang Juncheng Wins First Tour Tournament Title at Chengdu Open
The 19-year-old Chinese player defeated top-seeded Luis Musetti in straight sets
The men’s singles final of the Chengdu Open (Chengdu, China, hard, ATP250) was held on September 24, and world No. 67 Shang Juncheng (China) defeated top-seeded Luis Musetti (Italy) 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 in straight sets to win his first tour tournament.
Shang, a 19-year-old young player who is China’s hopeful, defeated Kei Nishikori, a former world No. 4 who participated as a wild card, in the first round of this tournament and advanced to his first final in a tour tournament by defeating seeded players such as No. 8 seed R. Safiullin and No. 2 seed A. Bublik (Kazakhstan).
In the first set of the final against the top-seeded Musetti, Shang took the lead in a tiebreak after both players broke serve once each. With this momentum, Shang won 73 percent of first serve points in the second set, did not give his opponent a break, and broke twice in the return games, winning his first tour tournament in one hour and 39 minutes.
This is the second time in history that a Chinese male player has won a tour tournament singles title, following Wu Yibin (China) who won the Dallas Open (USA/Dallas, indoor hard, ATP250) in February last year. This is the first time that Shang has won a tournament for China.
Additionally, Shang became the first player born after 2005 to win a tour title.
Shang’s Comments After the Match
“It’s really special for me, to win on home soil. I’ve had some tough matches this week. I played some really good tennis and kept my cool. Overall I’m really happy in Chengdu.”
