Teen Shooter Linked to Organized Crime in Sweden Salon Massacre

Uppsala Shooting: Teenager Arrested After Triple Homicide at Hair Salon

UPPSALA, Sweden – A 16-year-old was taken into custody Wednesday in connection with a triple homicide that occurred Tuesday in Uppsala,⁣ a city approximately 40 miles north of Stockholm.The shooting, which took place at a hair salon, claimed⁢ the lives of ​three males between the ⁣ages of 15 and 20, sparking concerns about escalating gang violence in Sweden.

The Uppsala Police Department confirmed ⁣the arrest, ​stating the suspect was apprehended at his residence. Andreas⁢ Nyberg, the prosecutor in charge, told ⁢reporters that the examination⁤ is ongoing.

Shooting Shakes Uppsala on Eve of Walpurgis

The shooting occurred‌ on the eve of Walpurgis, ​an annual festival on April 30 that draws large crowds, particularly students, ⁣too Uppsala. The violence has cast a shadow over the celebrations.

“A 16-year-old teenager was arrested, suspected of the ‌murder of three people who were killed on Tuesday ⁤in the center of⁤ Uppsala,” the⁣ Swedish​ prosecutor’s office said in a ‌statement Wednesday.

Links to Organized Crime Investigated

Swedish media outlets have reported potential links between at⁢ least one of the ⁤victims‍ and organized crime.However, police have not yet confirmed these connections.

“This is‍ something that​ we are obviously examining, but we do not want to embark on this only possibility,”‍ said Stefan Larsson, a spokesperson for the Uppsala police.

Sweden’s Struggle with⁢ Gang Violence

For ⁢several years, Sweden has grappled with a ‍surge in shootings and bomb attacks ⁤linked to rival gangs, primarily driven by ⁣the control of drug trafficking routes.

Erik Åkerlund, ‍a police official, stated ⁣at​ a press conference that several individuals “considered as an interest in the investigation” are being questioned. He added that surveillance camera footage and other evidence have been collected.

Uppsala is known to be a former base of operations for Ismael⁣ Abdo ‍and rawa Majid, two prominent rival ⁤gang leaders who are now believed to be‍ orchestrating activities from‌ abroad.

Gunnar Strömmer, the​ Minister of ⁢Justice, described the recent violence as ⁢”extremely serious.”

Community Reacts to Uppsala Shooting

A‌ crisis team established by the municipality was⁤ present in the city center Wednesday morning, maintaining a security ⁤perimeter around the‍ crime‌ scene.

Erik Pelling, the mayor of Uppsala,⁤ expressed his dismay, stating, “Like everyone, I‌ am⁢ shocked, dismayed by what happened, and I am also angry that it can happen.‌ We are forced to live with these crimes,I am frustrated that⁣ we have not​ managed to tackle this problem more effectively.”

Broader Trend of Violence in Sweden

While fatal violence saw a decrease last year,⁤ these incidents continue to unsettle major Swedish cities.

Recent incidents include ‌a mother and child seriously injured by an explosive device southwest of Stockholm on Sunday. Media reports ‍suggest a ‍neighbor with ​suspected ties to organized​ crime was ‍the intended‍ target.

On April 14, a shooting in Göteborg resulted in two fatalities, possibly linked to gang rivalries.

Authorities note a concerning trend of adolescents being recruited as hitmen, ⁤exploiting the fact that individuals under 15⁣ are below the⁢ age of criminal responsibility in ⁤Sweden.

In January, Swedish ⁣police reported a second consecutive year of decline in shootings, with 296 incidents recorded in 2024, ⁤a ⁤20% decrease compared ⁢to the previous year.

According to a report published in⁣ late ⁣March by the ⁢Swedish⁢ National Council‍ for Crime Prevention (BRA),Sweden,a nation of 10.6 million, recorded 92 cases of fatal violence in 2024, 29 fewer than in⁤ 2023.
