Professor Silvio Garattini‘s Advice

Professor Silvio Garattini,‌ a ⁤97-year-old ⁣oncologist, pharmacologist, and researcher, recently shared his insights on achieving greater longevity during an appearance on the Raiuno program “La volta buon,” hosted by Caterina Balivo. Garattini, founder and president of the Mario Negri Pharmacological Research Institute, emphasized the importance of preventative health ⁤education, suggesting that “one hour a week in each class” dedicated to health lessons with “trained and competent people” could ‍significantly improve⁢ public ⁣health‌ awareness.

Dietary⁤ Recommendations for a Longer Life

Garattini’s core advice centers around mindful eating. He ⁣stated that consuming smaller⁣ portions is crucial, alongside avoiding⁤ certain foods. Specifically,he recommends replacing red meat⁣ and butter with olive oil, citing⁤ wine as carcinogenic due to its alcohol content.

He also ⁣stressed‍ the importance of consistent ⁢nourishment, ⁣noting, “At midday I have at‌ least one orange juice or a banana, you have to eat something.” Garattini clarified⁤ that⁣ the timing of meals is less vital than⁢ the total amount of food consumed, stating, ⁣”One can even eat 5 times a day, provided that the total is relatively little.”

The⁣ Role ⁢of physical ⁤Activity

Beyond diet, Garattini highlighted⁢ the benefits of regular, strenuous‍ physical activity. He distinguished between casual movement and genuine exercise, stating ⁤that climbing stairs requires effort, while simply walking and window shopping does not‍ constitute sufficient physical activity.

A Lighthearted Exchange

During the program, guest Giancarlo Magalli jokingly remarked that ⁢if longevity ⁣is linked to eating little, he⁢ should already be deceased. Garattini ⁢responded with a direct‍ affirmation: “If you eat little, you will live ‍longer,” though Magalli countered that he would enjoy life less.
