A 14-year-old student, identified as Colt Gray, opened fire at a high school in Georgia, USA, on Wednesday morning, killing two students and two teachers. Nine other people were injured and are currently in the hospital. Gray is in custody and will be tried as an adult.
The victims have been identified as Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14, Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53, according to Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey.
Gray was previously considered a suspect after being questioned by police last year regarding anonymous reports of online threats to commit a school shooting. The online threats included photographs of weapons, according to the FBI. At the time, Gray and his father gave a statement at the police station, with the father claiming to have collected the weapons at home, but stating that Gray did not have unsupervised access to them. Gray denied making the online threats.
The United States has experienced hundreds of school shootings over the past two decades, with the deadliest resulting in over 40 deaths at Virginia Tech in 2007. These attacks have sparked a fierce debate over US gun laws and the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which enshrines the right to “keep and bear Arms.”
The incident highlights the need for increased awareness and action to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. It also raises questions about the effectiveness of current gun laws and the need for stricter regulations to ensure public safety.
