Teenage Sensation Konstas Earns Test Call-Up as Australia Shakes Up squad for Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Melbourne,Australia – In a bold move,19-year-old batting prodigy Sam Konstas has been named to the Australian Test squad for the remaining two matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India. The selection comes on the heels of Konstas’ impressive century against India for the Prime Minister’s XI earlier this month in Canberra.
Konstas’ inclusion signals a shift in strategy for the Australians, who have struggled to find consistency at the top of the order against India’s formidable pace attack.
“Sam gets a call up to the Test squad for the first time,” said Chief Selector George Bailey. “His style of batting offers a point of difference and we look forward to watching his game develop further.”
The selectors also opted to drop nathan McSweeney, who made his debut in Perth but struggled against the likes of Jasprit Bumrah.
“We remain confident Nathan has the ability and temperament to succeed at Test level in the future,” Bailey added. “It was a difficult decision to leave him out. It has clearly been a challenge at the top of the order for batters throughout the series and we want to provide the option of a different lineup for the next two matches.”
Further bolstering the squad, West Australian fast bowler Jhye Richardson has been called up as a replacement for the injured Josh Hazlewood. Richardson, who has 11 wickets in three Tests at an average of 22.09, brings valuable experience and pace to the attack.
