Teenager ⁤Rescued from Rip Current at Paritutu Beach

A teenager was safely ⁢rescued from ⁣a rip current ⁤at Paritutu⁢ Beach on‍ Thursday evening, thanks to the swift response of a ⁣police⁣ officer and a Surf Lifesaving member.

Rescue Details

Police received a call around 7:00 PM ⁢on Thursday reporting that a teenager was caught‍ in a rip current and unable to return to shore. A full water rescue operation was launched, including⁢ deployment of ⁤a rescue helicopter.

Initial attempts to reach the teenager were made by a surfer, but they were ‍unable to navigate⁤ the strong current. A police officer and a Surf Lifesaving member ⁢then entered the water equipped with a ⁣flotation ⁣device and successfully brought ⁤the teenager back to shore.

Official Statement

Central⁣ districts duty officer Inspector Ashley Gurney emphasized the fortunate outcome of the incident.⁢ “Without the quick thinking and bravery of my colleague and the Surf Lifesaving team member, ‍this incident woudl likely be drastically worse,” Gurney stated.

Gurney also⁢ commended the member ⁣of the public who attempted to⁢ assist the⁢ teenager, highlighting their bravery. “I⁣ commend them both on their‍ efforts, it is⁢ great that no one was seriously injured or worse,”‍ he added.
