Telangana Schools Get Menu Makeover: More Food, More Funds
Hyderabad, Telangana – In a bid to improve the nutritional well-being of students, the Telangana government has rolled out a new “uniform diet menu” across all residential schools adn welfare hostels in the state. The initiative, launched by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday, promises not only increased food portions but also a significant 40% boost in funding for food provisions.
This marks the first increase in food allocation in eight years, according to Reddy, who unveiled the program at a social welfare residential school in Chilkoor.
“we have increased the allocation of funds to food for students in all residential schools and hostels by 40%, for the first time after eight years,” reddy announced.
The government has also doubled the “cosmetic charges” for girl students, a move aimed at addressing rising costs and ensuring access to essential hygiene products.
“We have announced an unprecedented 200% increase in cosmetic charges for girl students, for the first time in the last 16 years,” Reddy stated.
He emphasized that these enhanced mess and cosmetic charges are now the highest in the country,reflecting the government’s commitment to student welfare.Beyond the Plate: Empowering Students
Reddy stressed that the government’s focus extends beyond simply providing meals. He highlighted the importance of equipping students with the skills and confidence to become active contributors to Telangana’s development.
“We are making all efforts to upgrade the skills of the students and make them partners in the reconstruction of Telangana state,” Reddy said.He also sought to dispel the misconception that government school students are inferior to their private school counterparts,pointing to the success stories of alumni from government residential schools,which were first established in 1971.”The government residential schools… have produced several IAS and IPS officers and other famous personalities,” Reddy noted.
A Call for Excellence: From Teachers to Officials
Addressing the teachers, Reddy urged them to go beyond academics and nurture students’ diverse talents.
“Teachers in government schools are more qualified than their counterparts in private schools,” Reddy asserted. “They should put in their best efforts to produce multitalented students.”
He pledged government support for providing necessary training and facilities to foster students’ talents.
Reddy also issued a stern warning against negligence,directing school managements to prevent future incidents of food poisoning and ensuring timely disbursement of funds.
“I have instructed the officials to see that the schools would get funds through green channel by the 10th of every month,” Reddy declared.He further mandated regular visits by officials and public representatives to residential schools, promising his own presence during official tours.
Opposition Raises Concerns
While the government celebrates the new initiative, opposition leader T Harish Rao expressed skepticism, calling for concrete action beyond symbolic visits.
“Why have hostel funds not been released for six months despite the claim of a ‘green channel’ for fund allocation?” Rao questioned.
He urged the government to address pressing issues like providing hot water, winter clothing, and timely payment to hostel staff.
