Telegram’s Android app has received a significant visual overhaul with the release of version 12.4.0, fully embracing a design language dubbed “Liquid Glass.” The update, rolling out now via the Play Store, marks a major shift in the app’s user interface, drawing clear inspiration from Apple’s recent iOS redesigns.
The transition to Liquid Glass isn’t a sudden change; Telegram began introducing elements of the new aesthetic in late 2025. However, version 12.4.0 represents a complete commitment to the look, extending it throughout the entire application. This builds upon the initial tweaks implemented in October and November of last year, which focused on redesigning specific UI components.
Perhaps the most noticeable change is the introduction of a four-tab bottom navigation bar. This design choice mirrors the layout found on iOS, providing quick access to Chats, Contacts, Settings, and Profile. Unlike previous versions of the Android app, this bottom bar remains persistently visible even while scrolling, offering consistent navigation throughout the app.
Accompanying the new bottom bar is a removal of the traditional “hamburger” side menu. Features previously accessible through this menu, such as the “New Group” option, have been relocated to a three-dot overflow menu located in the top right corner of the chats screen. This streamlines the interface and reduces clutter, aligning with the overall minimalist approach of the Liquid Glass design.
The Liquid Glass aesthetic is characterized by transparency and frosted visual elements. These are particularly prominent in the app’s light mode, where subtle layers beneath UI panels become visible. While not an exact replica of Apple’s implementation, the influence is undeniable, extending beyond simple transparency to encompass a broader design philosophy.
Telegram initially introduced full support for Liquid Glass on iOS in early January. The Android redesign follows closely, signaling a move towards a more unified design language across platforms. However, the reception to the changes hasn’t been universally positive, with some users expressing dissatisfaction on platforms like Reddit.
The shift towards Liquid Glass represents a broader trend in app design, prioritizing visual fluidity and a modern aesthetic. Apple’s adoption of the style in iOS has clearly influenced other developers, including Telegram, to explore similar approaches. The use of transparency and subtle visual effects aims to create a more immersive and engaging user experience.
While the functional aspects of Telegram remain unchanged, the visual redesign aims to modernize the app’s appearance and improve usability. The persistent bottom navigation bar, in particular, should offer a more convenient way to access key features. However, the success of the redesign will ultimately depend on user feedback and whether the changes resonate with Telegram’s diverse user base.
The update to version 12.4.0 is now widely available on the Google Play Store. Users can expect to see the new Liquid Glass design and revamped navigation system upon updating their Telegram app. It remains to be seen how the changes will be received in the long term, but they represent a significant step in Telegram’s ongoing effort to refine its user experience.
