Singapore – Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, currently on a five-day official visit too Singapore, has made a strong case for the inclusion of the Telugu language in the singaporean school curriculum. Addressing a vibrant gathering of approximately 2,000 diaspora members at the One World International School Digital Campus, Naidu highlighted the notable Telugu-speaking population in the city-state and emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting their cultural heritage.
Fostering Investment and Cultural Ties
The Chief MinisterS visit aims to position Andhra Pradesh as a prime investment destination, attracting global businesses and talent. During his address to the diaspora, which included Telugu entrepreneurs, professionals, and investors from across Southeast Asia, Naidu underscored the economic potential of his state.
A key initiative launched during his visit was the inauguration of a CXO (Chief Experience Officer) Club. This platform is designed to harness the collective expertise of Telugu-origin chief executives from multinational corporations worldwide, fostering collaboration and driving innovation. According to community leaders, Singapore is home to an estimated 40,000 individuals of Telugu origin, underscoring the relevance of such initiatives.
A Plea for Linguistic Inclusion
In his speech, Chief Minister Naidu directly appealed for the teaching of Telugu in singaporean schools.He conveyed this sentiment to Indian High Commissioner Dr. Shilpak Ambule, who confirmed his intention to take up the matter with the Singaporean goverment.”He told me to take up with the Singapore government the issue of Telugu as a second language,” Dr. Ambule told PTI, reflecting the Chief Minister’s commitment to cultural preservation. Singapore currently recognizes Tamil as one of its four official languages, alongside Malay, English, and Mandarin. Hindi and Punjabi are also offered as mother tongue languages in the nation’s schools, indicating a precedent for linguistic diversity.
Global Outreach and Entrepreneurship Support
Beyond advocating for language education, Naidu also announced plans for the establishment of a Global Export-Import cell upon his return to Andhra Pradesh. This initiative is part of a broader effort to bolster entrepreneurship among the estimated 30 lakh (3 million) Andhra Pradesh Non-Resident Telugus residing in 128 countries.
The Chief Minister highlighted the substantial financial contributions of Telugu Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), who reportedly remit approximately Rs 30,000 crore annually to Andhra Pradesh. He expressed optimism that this figure would continue to grow in the coming years.
Naidu also shared details of his P4 program, which stands for Public-Private-People Partnerships. This innovative approach aims to improve the living standards of all citizens by facilitating mentorship opportunities where affluent individuals guide and support underprivileged members of society.
The event, organized by the Andhra pradesh Non-Resident Telugu Society (APNRT), saw enthusiastic participation from a diverse group of attendees, reflecting the strong global presence and influence of the Telugu community.
