Recently, a popular Japanese YouTuber uploaded a video about rejecting a cooperation invitation from the Chinese shopping platform TEMU. In the video, he directly pointed out TEMU’s problems and publicly reviewed the products purchased at TEMU’s own expense.
Japanese technology product YouTuber TAKOMARU earlier released a video titled “Reject the cooperation proposal of “spend 1.2 million yen only to talk about the benefits of TEMU” and use your own money to purchase the product and try it out.” TAKOMARU said in the video that TEMU had invited him to make sponsored videos at high prices 5 or 6 times. He said that TAKOMARU only needed to make an 8-minute video and praise TEMU products in the video without mentioning any negative content or mentioning that it is Chinese companies can receive remuneration of 1 million to 2 million yen (approximately HKD 50,900 to 101,000).
Although the remuneration is very attractive, TAKOMARU believes that TEMU has some problems that cannot be ignored, so he has repeatedly rejected TEMU’s cooperation invitations. TAKOMARU pointed out that the better the company, the more it advises YouTubers to review products honestly, while TEMU is doing exactly the opposite. In addition, TEMU’s parent company was suspected of using malware-containing applications to illegally obtain users’ personal information such as call records and photos. Many consumers’ credit cards were improperly charged after spending money at TEMU. The U.S. government even listed TEMU as A platform with higher risks. In view of this, TAKOMARU was wary of TEMU and believed that the moral risks of cooperation with TEMU were extremely high, so he refused to cooperate and produced this video to expose the dark side of TEMU.
TAKOMARU used PayPal on the TEMU web version to purchase 13 products, including wireless headphones, power banks, glasses cleaning machines, gaming mice, gaming keyboards, etc., for a total of 11,168 yen (approximately HK$569). TAKOMARU said that purchasing the above products through normal channels costs about 40,410 yen (approximately HK$2,059), but it only costs about 1/4 of the price at TEMU.
TAKOMARU said that the 459 yen wireless earphones he purchased are similar in appearance to AirPods, but the earphone box consumes power very quickly and cannot be paired with any device; the ultrasonic glasses cleaning machine does not have ultrasonic technology and has a pungent smell; the one designed to imitate Logitech The gaming mouse has extremely poor accuracy and sensor response; the mechanical gaming keyboard is just a membrane keyboard, and its functions do not match the description.
Even though TAKOMARU pointed out many problems with the products, including even Razer knockoffs, all the products had ratings of more than four stars on TEMU, which made Takomaru question the credibility of TEMU, claiming that TEMU manipulated reviews and warned viewers not to buy.
