Leipzig Opera is set to launch the “Lortzing 26” festival on April 24, 2026, marking the 225th birthday and 175th death anniversary of composer Albert Lortzing with ten performances over ten days, including two premieres.
The festival, running from April 24 to May 3, 2026, will feature Albert Lortzing’s popular opera “The Armorer” (Der Waffenschmied), described as a comedy of errors about love and status, and his revolutionary opera “Regina” as the two new productions.
In addition to the premieres, the festival will include repertoire works such as “Tsar and Carpenter” and “Undine,” along with chamber and choir concerts in collaboration with the International Festival for Vocal Music “a cappella” and the Ensemble amarcord.
A scientific conference in cooperation with the University of Leipzig, several exhibitions, and performances by choirs from across Germany are also planned as part of the festival’s programming.
The Leipzig Opera is preparing family-friendly offers and guided walks to locations in the city significant to Lortzing, including the “Balduin zur Linde” Masonic lodge and sites related to the rediscovery of the Leipzig Schiller House with Robert Blum.
“Lortzing 26” aims to highlight the composer’s places of work and recall lost venues such as the “Altes Theater,” which once stood on what is now Richard-Wagner-Platz in Leipzig.
