Legal Proceedings scheduled for October 24th
Ten-time biathlon world champion Julia Simon will appear in court on October 24th to answer charges of theft and fraud related to unauthorized credit card use. The Prosecutor’s Office in Albertville, France, confirmed the hearing to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The case stems from allegations made in 2022 and 2023 that Simon used the credit cards of a French national team colleague, Justine Braisaz-Bouchet, and a member of the team’s support staff, for personal purchases totaling approximately €2300. The alleged fraudulent activity occurred during a training session in Norway in the summer of 2022. Simon has consistently denied the accusations, and initially filed a counter-suit alleging identity theft.
Brief Suspension and Return to Competition
following the emergence of the scandal, Simon was temporarily removed from the French national team in 2023 and briefly held in custody. Despite the legal proceedings, she demonstrated her continued athletic prowess by returning to the team and ultimately winning the overall World Cup title for the 2022/23 season.
From Legal Distance to Reconciliation
Initially, dialog between Simon and Braisaz-Bouchet was limited to exchanges through legal counsel. However, recent reports indicate a reconciliation between the two athletes, both considered strong contenders for the 2026 Winter Olympics, with both women celebrating victories together, suggesting a resolution to the personal conflict.
