Tennessee State Parks and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) are partnering with paddlesports leaders to offer low-cost beginner kayaking classes on Saturday, May 16, marking the kickoff of National Safe Boating Week. The initiative, now in its fifth year, has already introduced hundreds of Tennesseans to the sport of kayaking.
According to a press release from the TWRA, last year’s coordinated “Kayaking 101” event at Tennessee State Parks trained 108 students. The program was recognized with the National Safe Boating Council’s Communications Community Impact Award for its volunteer-led efforts.
This year, volunteers will host Kayaking 101 classes in over 40 locations across eight states. The event is supported by the American Canoe Association (ACA) of Tennessee and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, along with certified paddlesports instructors from across Tennessee.

All classes will be held on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. To 4 p.m., regardless of weather conditions.
