Vols Land at No.7 in Penultimate CFP Rankings, Await Playoff Fate
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee football capped off a remarkable regular season with a 36-23 victory over Vanderbilt,securing a 10-win season and a second-place tie in the SEC. The Volunteers’ notable performance earned them the No. 7 spot in the penultimate College Football Playoff Committee Rankings released Tuesday night.
The Vols (10-2,6-2 SEC) defied preseason expectations,exceeding their projected seventh-place finish in the SEC Media Day poll. Tennessee boasts a signature win over current No. 11 Alabama, with both of their losses coming on the road in tightly contested, fourth-quarter battles.
This marks the 17th consecutive appearance for Tennessee in the College Football Playoff rankings, a testament to the program’s resurgence under head coach Josh Heupel.
Now,the Volunteers anxiously await their fate. The CFP selection show airs Sunday at noon ET on ESPN,where they hope to hear their name called for the program’s frist-ever College Football Playoff berth.
First-round on-campus games are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 20 (one game) and Saturday, Dec. 21 (three games), with sites and game times to be steadfast on Sunday. The Friday game will kick off at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and ESPN. Saturday’s games will air at noon on TNT, 4 p.m. on TNT, and 8 p.m. on ABC and ESPN.
