Comedian Yvonne hughes shares her powerful journey of overcoming a debilitating illness and discovering her purpose through teh transformative power of laughter.
A Breath of Fresh Air: Life Before and After
For years, Yvonne Hughes lived a life defined by the struggle for breath. A severe illness had left her gasping, her breathing so shallow that each inhale was a conscious, often painful, effort. “I used to breathe so shallowly that I had to take a – haa! – sharp intake of breath – to feel I was breathing,” she recalls. This struggle punctuated even the simplest of daily actions, from fastening a seatbelt to walking and talking. The disease, she describes, was a suffocating force, “It suffocates you. It takes every inch of your breath away.”
comedy as a Lifeline
In the midst of this profound physical challenge, Hughes found an unexpected lifeline in comedy. It wasn’t just a source of amusement; it was a revelation. “I had never found anything for me in my life,” she admits. Without a partner or children, and feeling adrift from societal norms of career and family, Hughes felt a deep sense of isolation.”I had no community. Nothing,” she explains. “There were people getting their careers and their lives sorted. Comedy was the one thing that was for me. And it still is. Just for me.”
This personal connection to comedy provided not only “fun, joy and laughter” but also a sense of belonging and self-worth that had previously eluded her. It was a space where she could express herself authentically and find validation.
Embracing the Future
The impact of comedy extends beyond the stage for Hughes. It has fundamentally altered her relationship with her own life and future. Nearly four years ago, she met her partner, Alan, online. This relationship has necessitated a conscious effort to move beyond her ingrained instinct to “absent herself to mitigate later losses.” Learning to picture a future, and to allow herself to experience the pleasure of companionship, has been a significant personal victory. She actively catches herself “pulling back” and allows the joy she finds in Alan’s company to “quiet her mind.”
The contrast between her past and present is stark. “Now I can get in the car, pull the seatbelt over and go. I can walk and talk. I can laugh without wetting myself or going into a convulsion of coughing, pulling a muscle or breaking a rib,” she says with a palpable sense of relief and gratitude. The debilitating illness that once threatened to consume her is now something she can ”live with and not die from.” The prospect of reaching her pension, once a distant dream, is now a tangible reality.
A Testament to Resilience
Yvonne Hughes’s story is a powerful testament to human resilience and the profound impact of finding one’s passion. Her journey from struggling for breath to commanding a stage, and from feeling lost to finding purpose, is an inspiration. Comedy, for Hughes, has been more than just a career; it has been a path to reclaiming her life, her breath, and her very sense of self.
