From Wrestling Practice to the Octagon
For Terrance Saeteurn, a spot in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) isn’t just a career milestone; it’s the culmination of a dream nurtured as childhood. “Shoot, I was hoping it was coming,” Saeteurn shared, reflecting on the moment his ambition became reality. “I’ve been busting my butt the last seven or eight years, training in MMA, and I always wanted to be in the UFC as I was nine years old, so it’s kind of surreal right now.”
That early spark was ignited by his Uncle Johnny, who recognized a potential in young Terrance and introduced him to the world of wrestling. “The reason why I started fighting and why I fell in love with it, with martial arts and MMA and the UFC and all that, is all becuase of my uncle,” Saeteurn explained. He initially hesitated, almost backing out of his first wrestling practice, but his uncle’s encouragement - “Dude, just try it and if you don’t like it, then I won’t ask you to do it no more” – proved pivotal. That first practice, he recalls, was “the coolest f**king thing ever.”
Weeks later, watching his first UFC fight alongside his uncle solidified his path. It wasn’t a fleeting interest; over twenty years later, Saeteurn’s dedication remains unwavering.View Terrance Saeteurn’s athlete Profile on the official UFC website.
A Pro Career Forged Through Dedication
Saeteurn’s journey wasn’t immediate. He began his amateur career at 23, and just under four years later, he turned professional, competing in Urijah Faber’s A1 Combat promotion. This progression demonstrates a calculated and persistent approach to reaching the highest level of the sport. His commitment to consistent training and competition has now landed him on the UFC roster.
While Saeteurn’s passion is undeniable, his career path hasn’t been without its challenges, especially concerning his family. his grandparents, immigrants who arrived in the United States after the Vietnam War, hold traditional values. “My grandparents immigrated here after the Vietnam War, and they’re super traditional and super stuck in thier ways,” Saeteurn said. “They’re like, ‘You’re wasting your time doing this. You need to go get a job and you need to start saving your money and don’t spend any money.'”
Despite their reservations, saeteurn believes they understand his dedication. “But I know that they know that I love what I do. They just want me to be okay.” this highlights the common tension between pursuing personal passions and meeting familial expectations, a struggle many athletes face.
