ABC Suspends Terry Moran After Trump, Miller ‘Hater’ Comments
Updated June 09, 2025
ABC News has suspended senior national correspondent Terry Moran following social media posts where he described Donald Trump and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller as “world-class haters.” The network announced the suspension Sunday, citing its standards for objectivity and impartiality.
In his post on X, formerly Twitter, Moran wrote that Miller is “a man who is richly endowed with the capacity for hatred… You can see this just by looking at him because you can see that his hatreds are his spiritual nourishment.” He also called Trump ”a world-class hater” whose hatred is “only a means to an end, and that end [is] his own glorification.” Moran later deleted the post.
An ABC spokesperson stated that Moran’s post “does not reflect the views of others at ABC News and violated our standards.” the suspension is pending further evaluation.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called Moran’s post “unhinged and unacceptable” and said she contacted ABC News about accountability. Miller responded that “the privileged anchors and reporters narrating and gatekeeping our society have been radicals adopting a journalist’s pose.”
Moran had written that Miller “is one of the people who conceptualizes the impulses of the Trumpist movement and translates them into policy.” Miller, a key contributor to Project 2025, has been credited with crafting many of the Trump administration’s controversial immigration policies.
The incident is the latest development in the Trump administration’s strained relationship with ABC News. In December, the network settled a defamation suit brought by Trump for $15 million. The suit stemmed from George Stephanopoulos’ inaccurate statement that Trump was found civilly liable for rape in the E. Jean Carroll case.
Some ABC staffers reportedly expressed concern to Rolling Stone that the settlement signaled a “capitulation” to Trump, fearing it could set a tone of avoiding upsetting the president.
ABC News’ decision to suspend Terry Moran highlights the ongoing tensions between media objectivity and personal expression, particularly in the context of political commentary and the Trump administration’s relationship with the press. The network’s commitment to impartiality is now under scrutiny as it navigates the fallout from Moran’s remarks.
What’s next
ABC News will conduct a further evaluation of the situation before making a final decision regarding Moran’s employment status. The network’s handling of this incident will likely be closely watched by media observers and political analysts alike.
