Tesla Robotaxi launch Faces Scrutiny Amid Safety Concerns

Updated June 19, 2025

Tesla’s planned robotaxi launch in Austin is ⁣under scrutiny following safety tests that have raised concerns about the technology’s readiness. Elon Musk’s company intends to deploy thousands of these autonomous vehicles⁤ in Austin, with potential expansion to other cities like san Francisco.

However, a ⁣recent safety test conducted by The Dawn Project, a frequent critic of Tesla’s self-driving technology, showed a Tesla Model Y with Full self-Driving ⁣failing to stop for a school bus stop sign and a child-sized dummy. This has amplified worries regarding the safety⁣ of Tesla’s autonomous system.

Musk has acknowledged the possibility of delays. “We are being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift,” he wrote on X in June. The robotaxi launch is seen as a crucial step for Tesla to bolster investor confidence in its‍ ability to compete in the autonomous vehicle market.

Texas, with its⁣ relatively light regulations on autonomous vehicles, has become an attractive location for ⁣companies ⁣developing self-driving technology. If Tesla proceeds with its launch, its robotaxis will share Austin streets with competitors⁤ such as Waymo, Zoox, and ventures backed by VW and Hyundai. Waymo has been offering autonomous ride-hailing⁤ services in Austin as March, in partnership with Uber.
