Tesla Launches Robotaxi Service in Austin
Updated June 23, 2025
Tesla launched its robotaxi service Sunday in Austin, Texas, inviting a select group of users to experience its driverless technology. The robotaxis are 2025 Tesla Model Y vehicles equipped with unsupervised self-driving capabilities. A Tesla employee occupied the passenger seat as a safety measure during the initial rides.
Among the first to ride were retail investors and social media influencers. Herbert Ong, who conducts interviews with Tesla experts on X, said Tesla invited 14 people. Ong noted the car’s ability to accelerate and park effectively. Passengers paid $4.20 per ride.
Chuck Cook, another invitee, posted a video on X viewed 1.6 million times, expressing his impression with the car’s navigation in a parking lot. The robotaxi even joked about asking for a tip at the end of the ride, Cook said.
Sawyer Merritt, an influencer with over 900,000 followers on X, described his robotaxi experience as “awesome,” adding that it was “pretty wild” to see a Tesla without a driver. Dongjin (DJ) Seo, a Neuralink co-founder, called the ride “an incredible display of real-world AI” in a post on X.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk congratulated the company’s AI software and chip design teams, calling the robotaxi launch “successful.” He noted that both the AI chip and software were developed internally at Tesla. “Culmination of a decade of hard work,” musk wrote on X.
Musk said last year that Tesla robotaxis could expand rapidly, possibly utilizing existing Teslas through a software update to generate income for owners. “You can add or subtract your car to the fleet whenever you want,” Musk said at the company’s annual shareholder meeting.
Alphabet’s Waymo is the only other carmaker offering fully autonomous paid rides in the U.S. Waymo’s robotaxis rely on sensors and software. the company provides 250,000 paid robotaxi trips per week in cities including Phoenix, san Francisco, and Austin. Waymo plans to expand to Atlanta, miami, and Washington D.C. next year.
A recent study found that Waymo rides cost more than Uber and Lyft rides. Though, 70% of respondents said they would pay extra for the Waymo experience.
What’s next
Tesla plans to gather data and feedback from the initial Austin launch to refine its robotaxi service. Broader availability and expansion to other cities are expected as the technology matures and regulatory approvals are secured.
