Tesla & the Low-Altitude Economy: Analyst Prediction

June 7, 2025 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Business

Key‌ Points

  • Morgan Stanley sees a huge potential market in low-altitude commercial activities.
  • Tesla’s existing tech could give it an edge⁣ in the urban air ⁢mobility market.
  • Elon Musk ⁣voiced concerns about U.S. drone manufacturing⁣ capabilities.

Tesla’s Urban Air Mobility Ambitions: A $9 Trillion Opportunity?

‌ ⁢ ⁣Updated⁤ June 7,⁢ 2025
⁣

The future of transportation may lie just above our‌ heads. Morgan Stanley analyst ‌Adam Jonas⁢ suggests the low altitude economy (LAE) could dwarf the current automotive market. This emerging sector ⁣encompasses commercial aerial ⁣activities within one mile of‌ the earth’s surface,an airspace currently ⁣dominated by⁣ helicopters and small ⁢drones.

Advancements in artificial⁣ intelligence and‍ robotics⁢ are expected‍ to drive the growth of electric vertical‍ take-off and landing (eVTOL)⁣ vehicles.⁤ These aircraft ‌could revolutionize logistics, public safety, tourism,‌ urban commuting, and intercity travel.

While Morgan‌ Stanley predicts the “Urban Air Mobility” (UAM) market will reach $1 trillion by 2040 and $9 ‌trillion by ⁤2050, bank of America offers ⁢a more⁢ conservative estimate‌ of ⁤$23 billion by 2035. BofA⁤ anticipates slower adoption⁣ until then, citing the need for ‍improved economies of scale and battery technology to enhance eVTOL ⁤cost-effectiveness ‍and accessibility.

Companies like Archer Aviation and Joby Aviation⁣ are already vying for a piece of‌ this market, testing eVTOL models and pursuing ⁢certifications for passenger flights. However,Jonas believes Tesla could ⁢emerge as⁢ a‍ dominant player.

tesla has not announced any eVTOL development plans, but CEO Elon Musk has emphasized the importance of ⁣a domestic low-altitude economy.During a⁢ recent ‌earnings call, Musk expressed concern about the U.S.’s ‌limited drone manufacturing capabilities, quoting ⁣that any country unable ⁤to ⁢manufacture its ‌own drones risks becoming a vassal state.

Jonas ‍argues that Tesla possesses the necessary expertise in manufacturing, autonomy, electric motors, ‍batteries,‍ and robotics to succeed⁣ in ⁣the commercial and‌ military ⁤LAE. ⁤He⁢ estimates that Tesla’s share of a future $9 trillion UAM market could significantly boost its ⁤stock price.

Tesla’s ongoing work with autonomous vehicles ‍could provide a significant‍ advantage. Jonas noted that advancements in autonomous car technology ‍directly benefit the development of autonomous aerial ‍drones.Tesla is anticipated to launch its‍ robotaxi service‍ in Austin, Texas, later⁣ this month.

what’s next

The race⁢ to dominate the urban air mobility market is heating up. ⁢As companies continue ⁤to innovate and refine their technologies, the prospect‍ of affordable and accessible aerial transportation moves closer⁣ to reality. Tesla’s potential entry into this space could disrupt the industry and accelerate its growth.
