Tesla & the Low-Altitude Economy: Analyst Prediction
Tesla’s Urban Air Mobility Ambitions: A $9 Trillion Opportunity?
Updated June 7, 2025
The future of transportation may lie just above our heads. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas suggests the low altitude economy (LAE) could dwarf the current automotive market. This emerging sector encompasses commercial aerial activities within one mile of the earth’s surface,an airspace currently dominated by helicopters and small drones.
Advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics are expected to drive the growth of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles. These aircraft could revolutionize logistics, public safety, tourism, urban commuting, and intercity travel.
While Morgan Stanley predicts the “Urban Air Mobility” (UAM) market will reach $1 trillion by 2040 and $9 trillion by 2050, bank of America offers a more conservative estimate of $23 billion by 2035. BofA anticipates slower adoption until then, citing the need for improved economies of scale and battery technology to enhance eVTOL cost-effectiveness and accessibility.
Companies like Archer Aviation and Joby Aviation are already vying for a piece of this market, testing eVTOL models and pursuing certifications for passenger flights. However,Jonas believes Tesla could emerge as a dominant player.
tesla has not announced any eVTOL development plans, but CEO Elon Musk has emphasized the importance of a domestic low-altitude economy.During a recent earnings call, Musk expressed concern about the U.S.’s limited drone manufacturing capabilities, quoting that any country unable to manufacture its own drones risks becoming a vassal state.
Jonas argues that Tesla possesses the necessary expertise in manufacturing, autonomy, electric motors, batteries, and robotics to succeed in the commercial and military LAE. He estimates that Tesla’s share of a future $9 trillion UAM market could significantly boost its stock price.
Tesla’s ongoing work with autonomous vehicles could provide a significant advantage. Jonas noted that advancements in autonomous car technology directly benefit the development of autonomous aerial drones.Tesla is anticipated to launch its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, later this month.
what’s next
The race to dominate the urban air mobility market is heating up. As companies continue to innovate and refine their technologies, the prospect of affordable and accessible aerial transportation moves closer to reality. Tesla’s potential entry into this space could disrupt the industry and accelerate its growth.
