Volkswagen California: The Classic European Camper
California, the classic European camper
When you think of European campervans, the first thing that comes to mind is the Volkswagen California. Its origins date back to the Volkswagen Type 2 of the 1950s. This may come as no surprise, given its iconic presence and long history.
The latest T7 California, released in 2024, is based on the long-wheelbase T7 Multivan. It has a total length of 5173 mm and a wheelbase that is 269 mm longer than the previous model, which means more interior space.

The UK-spec powertrain options are the same as those available in the standard Multivan, including a plug-in hybrid 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The system produces 245hp and is all-wheel drive, making for a very reliable drive.
The ability to run up to 90km on electricity alone is also appealing. It may not be very meaningful for long-distance car trips, but it could improve fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions to some extent. The power source, the drive battery, should also be useful.
Interior made possible by years of experience: sliding doors on both sides
Even though it’s a diesel engine, it has a smooth feel and a maximum torque of 36.7kg-m. It can powerfully pull a camper loaded with several people, lots of luggage, a mini kitchen, and a sofa bed.
During the test drive, which took us around the rolling hills of Great Britain, we didn’t feel it was lacking in power, except for the sluggish response of the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The spacious interior makes use of Volkswagen’s many years of experience in building campervans, and is perfectly suited to today’s camping conditions.
For example, in response to the voice that a large refrigerator and kitchen equipment are not necessary, the new California has been made smaller. It has been moved to the side of the rear to secure more space. As a result, for the first time in the history of the car, both sides of the sliding door can be opened.
As an option, retractable awnings can be installed on both sides, creating a large space outside the vehicle that can be protected from the sun and rain when deployed.
Four adults can fit comfortably inside the car, whether driving or parked. With the pop-up roof up, even tall people can stand and walk normally. Fold down the rear seats and expose the pop-up roof floor to create two generously sized beds.
Although it is a bit of a hassle to unfold the bed, it should be comfortable enough for a few days. There are drawers and storage spaces everywhere, so you won’t have any trouble storing things.
Excellent ride comfort and maneuverability. An attractive, mobile home.
