A surprising new tool is emerging in the fight against post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): the classic video game Tetris. Recent research indicates that playing Tetris can significantly reduce the frequency and intensity of intrusive memories associated with trauma, offering a potentially accessible and scalable treatment option for millions.

The core of the issue lies in the debilitating nature of intrusive memories – vivid, unwanted recollections of traumatic events that can disrupt daily life and contribute to the development of PTSD. These memories aren’t simply recollections; they’re often experienced as if the event is happening again, triggering intense emotional distress. Existing therapies, while effective, can be resource-intensive and difficult to access, particularly for those experiencing ongoing trauma.

The breakthrough stems from a study published in The Lancet Psychiatry, and further detailed in reports from Oxford University and Euronews. Researchers focused on healthcare workers who experienced trauma during the COVID-19 pandemic, a population particularly vulnerable to psychological distress. The study employed a technique called Imagery Competing Task Intervention (ICTI), which utilizes Tetris gameplay to disrupt the consolidation of traumatic memories.

The principle behind ICTI is rooted in cognitive psychology. When a traumatic event occurs, the brain begins to consolidate the memory, making it more stable and readily accessible. This process is particularly active in the hours following the event. By engaging in a visually demanding task like Tetris, researchers theorize they can interrupt this consolidation process, effectively weakening the intrusive memory. The game’s demands on visuospatial processing compete with the brain’s attempt to solidify the traumatic image, reducing its vividness and emotional impact.

The study involved training participants in mental rotation – the cognitive ability to mentally manipulate 2D and 3D objects. They then applied this skill while playing Tetris, aiming to reduce the strength and frequency of unwanted memories by occupying the brain’s visuospatial resources. The results were striking. After just four weeks, participants in the Tetris group reported a reduction in intrusive memories from an average of fourteen per week to just one. This was a tenfold decrease compared to control groups who received alternative interventions, such as listening to music.

Perhaps even more encouraging, approximately 70% of participants who underwent the ICTI treatment reported being completely free of intrusive memories six months after the trial concluded. The intervention demonstrated a positive impact on overall PTSD symptoms, including reductions in anxiety and depression, which were noticeable as early as the fourth week of treatment.

“Even a single, fleeting intrusive memory of past trauma can exert a powerful impact in daily life by hijacking attention and leaving people at the mercy of unwanted and intrusive emotions,” explained Professor Emily Holmes of Uppsala University, the study’s lead author, as reported by Euronews. She added that by weakening the intrusive aspect of these sensory memories through this brief visual intervention, individuals experience fewer trauma images flashing back.

While this research builds on earlier work – a 2020 study published in the Journal of Psychiatry and Neuroscience demonstrated that Tetris gameplay could increase hippocampal volume in male patients with combat-related PTSD and reduce anxiety symptoms – the latest findings highlight the potential for a simple, accessible, and scalable intervention. The study’s focus on healthcare workers during the pandemic underscores the relevance of this approach in addressing trauma experienced by frontline professionals.

The implications of this research are significant. According to the World Health Organization, psychological trauma affects seven out of ten people at some point in their lives. A low-intensity, easily accessible treatment like Tetris-based ICTI could potentially transform the prevention and treatment of PTSD globally, particularly in settings where traditional therapies are unavailable or unaffordable.

It’s important to note that this research is ongoing, and further studies are needed to confirm these findings in diverse populations and to optimize the ICTI protocol. However, the initial results offer a promising new avenue for addressing the devastating impact of trauma and PTSD, suggesting that a familiar video game could hold the key to unlocking a more hopeful future for those struggling with intrusive memories.
