Texas Abbott Won’t Release Elon Musk Emails – ProPublica

Texas⁣ Officials Withholding Records on SpaceX Starship Launch Site

Texas officials are continuing to withhold records related to ‍SpaceX’s Starship launch site in Boca Chica, despite a public information request filed by The texas Newsroom. The records, ‍which could shed light‌ on the state’s involvement adn oversight of the controversial project, ⁤remain largely inaccessible.

The Ongoing Information Blackout

The Texas Newsroom filed a public information request for records concerning‍ SpaceX’s‍ operations and the state’s regulatory actions. However, much of the information provided by the Governor’s office has been heavily redacted, leaving key details about SpaceX’s arguments and the state’s response obscured.

Redacted Details and Unanswered Questions

A letter from a state ⁣official, identified as ⁣Bagnall, offered⁢ further explanation of SpaceX’s position, but the majority of this document was also redacted. This lack of openness raises concerns about the ⁢extent to which the public is being informed about a significant industrial project impacting the Texas coast.

Representatives for Elon Musk and⁢ his companies, including SpaceX,did not respond to‍ requests for comment regarding the withheld records. Similarly, a spokesperson for Governor abbott declined to answer specific questions about the records, including whether The Texas Newsroom would ⁣be reimbursed if the ⁣Attorney ‍General’s office‍ ultimately⁤ decides to withhold them.

In a statement, the Governor’s office asserted its ‌commitment to the Texas Public Information Act. “The Office ⁢of the Governor rigorously complies with the Texas Public Information Act and will release any responsive‌ information that is resolute to not be confidential or excepted from disclosure,” the statement read.

The⁤ Office of the Attorney General now has 45 business days to review the records and make a determination on whether they can be released to the public. This extended timeline further delays the potential for public access to ⁣crucial information.
