Texas A&M Falls to No. 20 Arkansas 99-84 Despite Clemence’s Career High
Aggies Fall to No. 20 Arkansas in High-Scoring Contest
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A late surge from No. 20 Arkansas proved too much for the Texas A&M men’s basketball team, resulting in a 99-84 loss Wednesday night inside Bud Walton Arena. Despite a career performance from Zach Clemence, the Aggies were unable to contain the Razorbacks’ offensive firepower.
Clemence led all scorers with a career-high 29 points, showcasing remarkable efficiency from the field. He connected on 11 of 14 shots (78.6%), including 3 of 6 attempts from beyond the arc. A significant portion of his scoring, 22 points, came in the second half as he relentlessly attacked the basket.
Rashaun Agee provided valuable support with 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, demonstrating his versatility and impact on both ends of the court. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome Arkansas’ dominance in second-chance opportunities.
Texas A&M (19-9, 9-6 SEC) shot an impressive 52.6% from the field (30-of-57), and even better in the second half at 59.4% (19-of-32). Despite this offensive efficiency, the Aggies were hampered by the Razorbacks’ ability to secure crucial offensive rebounds, leading to an 18-4 advantage in second-chance points – a critical factor in the outcome.
The game began with a promising start for Texas A&M. After Arkansas scored the opening basket, the Aggies quickly responded with an 11-2 run, establishing an early lead at the 15:08 mark. However, the Razorbacks answered with a pair of significant runs – 16-0 and 14-4 – to seize control of the first half, building a 37-22 advantage with 2:32 remaining. The Aggies managed to close the gap before halftime, scoring the final three baskets of the stanza to reduce the deficit to 37-28.
Agee was a key contributor in the first half, pacing the Aggies with 13 points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting performance, including one successful three-pointer.
The Razorbacks extended their lead to 52-35 in the opening minutes of the second half. Texas A&M refused to concede, mounting a spirited comeback fueled by Clemence’s scoring prowess. Ten points from Clemence spearheaded a 20-7 charge, narrowing the Arkansas lead to just four points at the midway point of the half. However, the Aggies were unable to fully close the gap as Arkansas found a rhythm, making 13 consecutive field goals down the stretch, effectively sealing the victory.
The Razorbacks’ sustained offensive execution proved decisive, preventing the Aggies from mounting a final, game-changing run.
Looking Ahead
Texas A&M will return to action on Saturday, hosting the Texas Longhorns in a 3 p.m. Contest inside Reed Arena. The highly anticipated Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown will be broadcast on ESPN2, promising a competitive matchup between the two Texas rivals.
“We’ve got to be better. We didn’t close possessions, and they were relentless on the glass. That’s a recipe for disaster against a team like Arkansas.”
