Texas Hill Country, TX - A catastrophic flash flood event has swept through the Texas Hill Country, leaving a trail of destruction and prompting urgent rescue efforts. The sudden and intense rise of the Guadalupe River overwhelmed communities, with officials admitting a lack of preparedness for the scale of the disaster. Meanwhile, severe thunderstorms in New Jersey have resulted in multiple fatalities and widespread damage.
Texas Hill Country Grapples with Unprecedented Flooding
The Texas Hill Country, a popular summer destination known for its scenic beauty, vineyards, and vacation rentals, has been hit by devastating flash floods. The Guadalupe River experienced a dramatic surge, with its gauge at Hunt recording a 22-foot rise in approximately two hours, ultimately failing after registering a level of 29 feet.”This is the kind of thing that will catch you unaware,” stated Bob Fogarty, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Austin/San Antonio office. “The water’s moving so fast, you’re not going to recognize how bad it is until it’s on top of you.”
The suddenness of the flooding caught many residents and officials off guard. When questioned about the lack of advance warning, one official, Kelly, stated, “we do not have a warning system” and “we didn’t know this flood was coming.” This assertion was met with skepticism by local reporters who pointed to existing flood watches and warnings. Kelly further explained, “Rest assured, no one knew this kind of flood was coming. we have floods all the time. This is the most risky river valley in the United States.”
Camps and Communities Under Siege
The flooding has had a especially severe impact on summer camps and residential areas along the river. Dozens of families have taken to social media, desperately seeking facts about children, nieces, nephews, and other family members attending camps or camping in the affected region.
The Ingram Fire Department shared a statement from Camp Mystic, a private Christian summer camp for girls, which described experiencing “catastrophic level floods.” The camp confirmed that parents of unaccounted-for daughters were being contacted directly. Another camp, Camp Waldemar, located east of Hunt, reported on Instagram that ”we are all safe and sound.”
Governor Greg Abbott has pledged state resources to assist the Hill Country communities, including Kerrville, Ingram, and Hunt, which are bearing the brunt of the disaster. The region, popular for outdoor activities, is known to be prone to flash flooding, but the intensity of this event appears to have surpassed previous occurrences.
Severe Weather in New Jersey Claims Lives
In a separate incident, severe thunderstorms have caused meaningful disruption and loss of life in central New Jersey. At least three fatalities have been attributed to the storms. In Plainfield, two men, aged 79 and 25, died when a tree fell onto thier vehicle during the height of the storm.”our hearts are heavy today,” Mayor Adrian O. Mapp said in a statement.”This tragedy is a sobering reminder of the power of nature and the fragility of life.” The devastating storms led to the cancellation of Plainfield’s Fourth of July parade, concert, and fireworks show, with the mayor emphasizing the need to focus on recovery efforts in the heavily damaged community.
Across southern New England, the storms left a wake of continuing power outages and downed trees. some communities reported significant hail, and there were also accounts of vehicles skidding off roads in northeastern Connecticut, highlighting the widespread impact of the severe weather.
