The race for a U.S. Senate seat in Texas is taking shape, distinguished by the contrasting approaches of Democratic candidates Jasmine Crockett and James Talarico to capturing voter attention in the digital age. While both are adept at leveraging social media, their strategies – and the messages they amplify – offer a glimpse into the broader debate within the Democratic party about the best path to breaking the Republican hold on the state.

Crockett, a congresswoman representing a district in the Dallas area, has gained significant traction with viral TikTok videos, including a clip of her responding to billionaire Elon Musk with a blunt, two-word phrase that has garnered over 20.7 million views. Her content often features direct engagement with political opponents, exemplified by a clash with Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene that resulted in a widely circulated exchange of pointed remarks. She has 2.2 million TikTok followers.

Talarico, a state representative currently training to be a Presbyterian minister, takes a different tack. His most popular TikTok video, viewed 15.5 million times, focuses on a critique of billionaires and a call for a shift in political priorities. He frequently incorporates his faith into his online presence, posting videos that highlight his values and policy positions. He has 1.5 million TikTok followers.

The March 3rd primary will serve as a crucial test for Texas Democrats, revealing their preferred strategy for challenging the state’s long-standing Republican dominance and contributing to the broader effort to regain control of the Senate. Allison Campolo, Democratic Party chair for Fort Worth’s home county, noted that while the candidates’ voting records would likely be similar, their political styles are markedly different.

Social media’s influence extends beyond simply generating attention. it also plays a vital role in fundraising. Both candidates have demonstrated success in leveraging online platforms to solicit donations. Crockett raised approximately $642,000 in the first week of her campaign and has amassed $6.5 million including funds carried over from her previous House account. Talarico raised over $1.2 million in his campaign’s initial week, ultimately collecting more than $13 million in contributions.

However, the reliance on social media isn’t without its risks. A recent incident involving a TikTok influencer alleging that Talarico referred to former U.S. Representative Colin Allred as “mediocre” sparked controversy, raising questions about racial dynamics within the primary. Talarico responded with a statement characterizing the claim as a “mischaracterization” of a private conversation.

Democrats are expressing renewed optimism about their chances in Texas, particularly given the potential for a competitive Republican primary. Republicans may not renominate four-term Senator John Cornyn, and a potential challenge from state Attorney General Ken Paxton, who faces ongoing legal issues, could create an opening for Democrats. The recent Democratic victory in a special election for the Texas state Senate has further fueled this optimism.

Crockett, a former public defender and civil-rights attorney, is seen by her supporters as the candidate best positioned to energize voters of color, a key demographic for the Democratic party. Talarico’s backers, meanwhile, believe his emphasis on faith could broaden his appeal to a wider range of voters.
