SISAKET, Thailand/PHNOM PENH – Thailand and Cambodia have formally agreed to Malaysia’s role as a mediator in their escalating border conflict, with both nations reporting further artillery attacks across contested territories. The proclamation came from Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan on July 27, as diplomatic efforts intensify to de-escalate the volatile situation.
High-Level Talks Scheduled in Malaysia
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai are expected to convene in Malaysia on the evening of July 28 for crucial discussions. The United States has also actively engaged in diplomatic efforts, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio speaking to Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa and Cambodian foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn on July 27. According to a US State Department statement, Rubio urged both sides to “promptly de-escalate tensions.” The US has also expressed its readiness to “facilitate future discussions in order to ensure peace and stability between Thailand and Cambodia.”
These diplomatic overtures follow comments made by US President Donald Trump on july 26, who indicated that the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to work towards a ceasefire.In a post on Truth social, Trump alluded to the potential impact on trade relations, expressing hope for lasting peace and stating his anticipation of concluding trading agreements with both nations onc peace is achieved.
ASEAN’s Role in Peace Efforts
The upcoming talks in Malaysia are a direct result of a proposal for a ceasefire put forth by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who currently chairs ASEAN in 2025.Ibrahim had proposed the ceasefire on July 25, highlighting the regional bloc’s commitment to maintaining stability in Southeast Asia.
The conflict, which erupted four days prior, marks the worst fighting between the two Southeast Asian neighbors in over a decade. The death toll has tragically risen to over 30, including 13 civilians in Thailand and eight in Cambodia. Authorities have reported that more than 200,000 people have been evacuated from the affected border areas in both countries.
