Bangkok – Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has reaffirmed plans to construct a border wall with Cambodia, and maintain a closed border, following a stronger-than-expected victory for his Bhumjaithai party in the February 8th general election. The project, initially proposed in late December 2025, is contingent on the Bhumjaithai Party retaining administrative power, and will be primarily funded through the national defence budget.

The commitment to the border wall comes amid lingering tensions following recent clashes between Thai and Cambodian forces. While a ceasefire was brokered on July 28th, 2025, after five days of conflict that resulted in at least 48 fatalities and widespread displacement, the underlying dispute over border demarcation remains unresolved. September 29th, 2025, Prime Minister Charnvirakul proposed a referendum to address the ongoing dispute over a demarcation agreement, seeking public support to potentially revoke the existing memorandum of understanding with Cambodia.

The proposed wall is envisioned as a phased construction, beginning in areas where territorial disputes are less acute. The Royal Thai Army (RTA) has identified Pong Nam Ron district in Chanthaburi province as a likely starting point. The estimated cost is approximately 7 million baht per kilometre, excluding the additional expense of constructing a parallel patrol road for security forces. The total length of the Thai-Cambodian border is 817 kilometres (508 miles).

The initiative builds on a pre-existing proposal championed by Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Krom Phra Srisavangavadhana, who advocated for a “Thai-Cambodian border wall” to enhance the safety of both soldiers and civilians residing in border regions. This royal endorsement provided early momentum for the project, which gained further traction following the July clashes and the subsequent political success of Prime Minister Charnvirakul.

The decision to pursue a border wall reflects a hardening stance on border security within Thailand, particularly in response to perceived vulnerabilities and ongoing disputes with Cambodia. The Prime Minister’s pledge to maintain a closed border underscores this commitment to a more restrictive approach to managing the relationship with its neighbour. This policy contrasts with the broader aims of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which promotes regional cooperation and open borders.

The border dispute itself stems from disagreements over the interpretation of existing agreements dating back to 2000 and 2001, which established a framework for joint survey and demarcation of the land boundary, as well as potential resource sharing in maritime areas. However, these agreements have faced increasing scrutiny within Thailand, particularly after the recent escalation of hostilities. The proposed referendum is intended to gauge public opinion on whether to abandon these existing frameworks in favour of a more assertive approach to border security.

The timing of Prime Minister Charnvirakul’s announcement, following his party’s electoral victory, suggests a strategic calculation to capitalize on public concerns about border security and solidify his political mandate. He has expressed a desire to form a strong majority government, which would provide the necessary political capital to implement his ambitious policy agenda, including the construction of the border wall. The election results, announced on February 9th, 2026, are still being finalized as of this report.

The construction of a permanent border fence, confirmed by the RTA, will initially cover a 10-kilometre stretch near Aranyaprathet. This represents the first phase of a larger project intended to address ongoing security concerns along the shared boundary. The move signals a shift towards a more permanent and physically defined border, moving away from the reliance on negotiated agreements and joint patrols that have characterized the relationship in recent decades.

The implications of this policy extend beyond the immediate bilateral relationship between Thailand and Cambodia. The construction of a border wall could potentially strain regional cooperation within ASEAN, and may set a precedent for other countries in the region to adopt more unilateral approaches to border security. It also raises questions about the potential impact on cross-border trade, migration, and the livelihoods of communities living in border areas.

While the Thai government frames the border wall as a necessary measure to enhance security and prevent future conflicts, Cambodia has yet to officially respond to the latest reaffirmation of the project. The potential for further diplomatic tensions remains high, particularly if Cambodia views the construction of the wall as a unilateral act of aggression or a violation of existing agreements. The international community will be closely monitoring the situation, and may urge both sides to engage in dialogue and seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing border dispute.
