Thailand Protests Cambodian Landmine Incident

Incident Overview
On December 21, 2025, a Thai soldier from teh Royal Thai Navy was injured and permanently disabled after stepping on a landmine in the Ban Nong Ri area of Trat Province, Thailand. The Chanthaburi and Trat Border Defense Command (BPC) had been inspecting the area following reports of activity.
The Ban Nong Ri area was previously occupied by Cambodian forces and used as a military base.Thai authorities discovered a critically important cache of weapons and landmines in the area, suggesting a intentional effort to target Thai soldiers.
Thailand’s Condemnation and Diplomatic Response
Thailand strongly condemns Cambodia’s use of anti-personnel mines, viewing it as a violation of Thai sovereignty and territorial integrity. This action also contravenes a joint declaration between Thailand and Cambodia, as well as Cambodia’s obligations under the Convention on the Prohibition of Anti-Personnel mines (Ottawa Convention), to which Cambodia is a signatory.
Thailand is formally protesting the incident by sending a protest letter to Cambodia. Additionally, Thailand is engaging with Zambia, the chair of the 23rd Conference of States Parties to the Convention, to ensure the continued implementation of the Convention’s mechanisms.
Call for Cooperation and Demining Efforts
Thailand has expressed condolences to the families affected by the landmine incident. The Thai government is urging Cambodia to cease all actions that violate the Ottawa Convention and to actively cooperate in humanitarian demining operations along the border.
