Storm “Depression” Warning Issued for Thailand
September 17, 2024 – The Meteorological Department has announced a Storm “Depression” warning, stating that a depression has occurred in the upper part of the South China Sea.
According to the Meteorological Department’s website, the depression’s center is located at 17.5 degrees north latitude and 116.5 degrees east longitude, with a maximum wind speed near the center of approximately 56 kilometers per hour.
Storm Movement and Expected Landfall
The storm is moving westward at a speed of about 40 kilometers per hour and is likely to strengthen into a tropical storm. It is expected to make landfall in central Vietnam between September 20 and 21, 2024, and will subsequently weaken.
This development is expected to bring more rain to Thailand, with heavy to very heavy rains forecasted for the northern and northeastern regions. Bangkok and surrounding areas, as well as the eastern and southern regions, can expect very heavy rains in some areas, accompanied by strong winds from September 20 to 23, 2024.
Monsoon Depression and Heavy Rains
During the period of September 17-21, 2024, the monsoon depression will be quite strong in the northern, central, and northeastern regions. The strong southwest monsoon blowing over the Andaman Sea, the southern region, and the Gulf of Thailand will cause heavy rains in some areas of the northern and northeastern regions, as well as the central region, including Bangkok and surrounding areas.
Very heavy rains are also expected in some areas of the eastern and southern regions.
Wind Waves and Maritime Advisory
The wind waves in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand will be stronger, with waves reaching 2-4 meters high in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand. In areas with thunderstorms, waves can exceed 4 meters high.
Boaters in the area are advised to exercise caution and avoid sailing in areas with thunderstorms. Ships in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand should refrain from leaving the shore during the indicated days and times.
