Bangkok, Thailand & phnom Penh, Cambodia – Tensions have flared dramatically along the Thai-Cambodian border, with fierce fighting erupting in multiple locations, prompting calls for an immediate ceasefire and diplomatic intervention from regional and international powers. The renewed hostilities, which resumed early Friday after a brief lull, mark a notable escalation in a long-standing territorial dispute that has previously led to loss of life and displacement.
Fighting Intensifies as Rockets and Artillery Rain Down
AFP journalists witnessed soldiers rushing to man rocket launchers and speeding towards the frontier, underscoring the gravity of the situation. The Thai army reported that fighting resumed around 4:00 am on Friday (2100 GMT Thursday) in three areas. Cambodian forces are accused of initiating bombardments with heavy weapons, field artillery, and BM-21 rocket systems, to which Thai troops responded with “appropriate supporting fire.”
The clashes on thursday were concentrated in six locations, according to the Thai army, with particular intensity around two ancient temples that lie in contested border zones. Ground troops, supported by tanks, engaged in fierce battles for territorial control. Cambodia fired rockets and shells into Thailand, prompting the scramble of F-16 jets by the Thai air force to target military positions across the border.
Both nations have pointed fingers at each other for initiating the hostilities. Thailand has also accused Cambodia of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, reporting that a hospital and a petrol station were hit by shells and rockets, respectively.
Diplomatic Efforts Underway Amidst Downgraded Ties
The escalating conflict has triggered a swift diplomatic response. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, whose country currently chairs the regional bloc ASEAN, confirmed he held talks with the leaders of both Thailand and Cambodia on Thursday. he appealed for a ceasefire and urged both sides to engage in dialog.
“I welcome the positive signals and willingness shown by both Bangkok and Phnom Penh to consider this path forward,” Anwar stated in a Facebook post late Thursday, expressing cautious optimism.
however, this optimism was short-lived as fighting resumed. The diplomatic fallout has been swift and severe.Thursday’s clashes occured just hours after thailand expelled the Cambodian ambassador and recalled its own envoy following an incident where five members of a Thai military patrol were wounded by a landmine. In response, Cambodia downgraded diplomatic ties to “the lowest level,” withdrawing all but one of its diplomats and expelling their Thai counterparts from Phnom Penh.
International Community calls for De-escalation
At the request of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, the UN Security Council is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on Friday to address the deadly clashes, according to diplomatic sources.
The United States has urged an “immediate” cessation of the conflict, a sentiment echoed by France, Cambodia’s former colonial ruler. The European Union and China, a close ally of Phnom Penh, have both expressed ”deep concern” over the clashes and called for a peaceful resolution through dialogue.
A History of Border Disputes
The current fighting represents a dramatic escalation in a long-running dispute over their shared 800-kilometer frontier. Decades of disagreement have seen dozens of kilometers in several areas remain contested. Previous outbreaks of fighting between 2008 and 2011 resulted in at least 28 fatalities and displaced tens of thousands of people.
A ruling by a UN court in 2013 provided a resolution that held for over a decade. however, the current crisis reignited in May with the killing of a Cambodian soldier during a new border clash, setting the stage for the renewed and intensified hostilities witnessed today. The ongoing conflict poses a significant challenge to regional stability, notably given that both nations are popular destinations for millions of foreign tourists.
