Thailand Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage: Hundreds to Wed

Thailand Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage: Hundreds to Wed

January 22, 2025 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

Thailand Leads Southeast Asia in Marriage Equality

In a historic moment, Thailand has become the first Southeast Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage, a landmark victory for the LGBTQ+ community that has been advocating for over a decade. The new law, endorsed by King Maha Vajiralongkorn last year, grants same-sex couples full legal, financial, and medical rights, as well as adoption and inheritance privileges.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra hailed the occasion, inviting LGBTQ+ couples and activists to celebrate at government offices. "This demonstrates that Thailand is ready to embrace diversity and accept love in all its forms," she said.

Across the country, from the coastal city of Pattaya to the mountainous north in Chiang Mai, celebrations are planned. In Bangkok, at least 200 couples are set to tie the knot in a mass wedding at a popular shopping mall, with a ‘pride carpet’ and performances by celebrities and drag queens.

For many, this day has been long overdue. Nina Chetniphat Chuadkhunthod, a transgender woman, has been unable to marry her boyfriend of 22 years due to legal gender identity barriers. But with the new law, they plan to register their marriage on Thursday. "I felt the proudest moment of my life that I could do this and let people know," she said.

The couple’s urgency is amplified by their 7-year-old daughter, whom they’ve been raising for three years. They plan to adopt her and live as a family, a dream now within reach. "I can confidently say that I can do it, building a family of my own," Chuadkhunthod said.

Ana Boncan, a Philippine national, met her Thai girlfriend Siri Wattanavikij through a dating app six years ago. With the new law, they can now apply for a marriage visa. "When we go to the hospital, I can tell them that this is my wife, this is my partner, she makes decisions for me," Boncan said.

However, rights experts warn that Thailand may be the last Asian jurisdiction to recognize same-sex marriage for some time, given the slow progress elsewhere in the region. While more than 30 jurisdictions worldwide now recognize same-sex marriage, most advances have been made in Europe, the Americas, and Australasia.

Back in Thailand, the fight for equal rights continues for other sexual minorities, particularly transgender people. Despite the country’s reputation for embracing trans individuals, local transgender people face daily discrimination. Parliament rejected a proposed gender recognition bill last year, but activists are pushing to put it back on the political agenda.

"We should use marriage equality as an opportunity to open another door for gender recognition," said Hua Boonyapisomparn, a rights advocate from the Foundation of Transgender Alliance for Human Rights.
