Political Turmoil and Options for the Premiership
Bangkok,Thailand – Thailand’s ruling Pheu Thai party is navigating a period of intense political uncertainty, weighing the possibility of dissolving parliament and triggering a new general election. The announcement, made by Pheu thai Secretary General Sorawong Thienthong on Tuesday, September 2, 2024, signals a deepening struggle to form the next government.
Sorawong stated the party is considering two primary paths forward: nominating Chaikasem Nitisiri as its candidate for prime minister or opting for a fresh election. This deliberation comes as the People’s Party, currently holding the largest number of seats in parliament, continues discussions on which party to support – Pheu Thai or the bhumjaithai party.
The Role of the People’s Party and Bhumjaithai
The People’s Party is holding a second day of meetings to determine its preferred coalition partner. Their decision is crucial as it could sway the balance of power between Pheu Thai and Bhumjaithai, which left the governing coalition in June 2024 and is now actively seeking to lead the government.
Sorawong indicated that Pheu Thai’s next steps are contingent on the People’s Party’s choice. “If the People’s Party have the decision to vote for Anutin, we will proceed with the process,” he told reporters, referring to Anutin Charnvirakul, the leader of Bhumjaithai. Should a vote for prime minister selection be scheduled, Pheu Thai intends to put forward Chaikasem Nitisiri as its nominee.
Recent Court Decision and the Shinawatra Family
The current political instability was exacerbated by a recent court ruling that disqualified Paetongtarn Shinawatra from holding the position of prime minister. Paetongtarn, the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was removed due to an ethics violation.Thaksin Shinawatra himself recently faced a verdict related to lese-majeste laws.
This decision has ignited a power struggle between the Pheu Thai party, historically linked to the Shinawatra family, and Anutin Charnvirakul’s Bhumjaithai party.
