Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce has launched a comprehensive campaign aimed at alleviating the financial burden on consumers amidst rising living costs. The initiative, titled “Thai Helps Thai,” officially commenced on April 1, 2026, and introduces significant price reductions on essential household goods. The ministry announced that the program will offer discounts of up to 50 percent on selected items, marking a decisive government intervention to stabilize prices across the supply chain.

The campaign represents a coordinated effort between the government, wholesale and retail chains, and leading manufacturers. According to reporting from Nation Thailand, the Ministry of Commerce is stepping up daily inspections to prevent overpricing and hoarding alongside the discount rollout. The objective is to support living costs and reduce burdens for everyone from farmers and producers to retailers and consumers. Officials stated that the measures are a response to higher global oil prices, which have inevitably increased production and transport costs.

Discount Structure and Product Availability

Under the “Thai Helps Thai” scheme, consumers can access cost-saving options on essential consumer products. Thai Rath reported that the core of the initiative involves offering items under House Brand and Fighting Brand labels. These budget formula products include staples such as rice, canned food, cooking oil, shampoo, and soap. The goal is to distribute these products across all 77 provinces nationwide from April through May 2026.

NBT World indicated that the campaign offers up to 50 percent discounts on over 1,000 items. The cooperation extends to modern trade wholesalers and retailers, ensuring wide availability of the discounted goods. By focusing on house brands and budget formulas, the ministry aims to provide immediate relief to households facing inflationary pressure. The distribution network is designed to reach consumers in every province, ensuring that the price cuts are not limited to major urban centers.

Enforcement and Price Control Measures

Alongside the discount program, the Ministry of Commerce is applying stringent legal measures to monitor the market. Kanittha Kangsuanich, inspector-general and deputy spokesperson for the ministry, said officials are continuing to work in coordination with provincial governors, provincial energy offices, and provincial committees to monitor and inspect prices daily. The aim is to prevent opportunistic overpricing and stockpiling during this period of economic strain.

Data from the Department of Internal Trade’s hotline 1569 highlights the volume of consumer concerns leading up to the launch. Between March 1 and March 26, 2026, the hotline received 410 complaints. Of these, 187 cases have been checked, with more than 200 still under review. Among the complaints were 44 cases alleging goods were sold at “unreasonable prices.” Kanittha said officials have requested cost documents from operators for verification, and if wrongdoing is found, authorities will pursue legal action to the fullest extent.

To further tighten oversight, the ministry plans to apply stringent legal measures by proposing to the Central Committee on Prices of Goods and Services the addition of “plastic pellets” and “bottled drinking water” to the list of controlled goods. The ministry will closely monitor price increases on essential items like toilet paper, detergent powder, and dishwashing liquid, requiring prior approval from the Department of Internal Trade before any price adjustments. Officials emphasized that they will not tolerate unjustified price hikes, stating that essential goods must be tightly regulated to ensure the public’s wellbeing.

Long-Term Support Projects

Beyond the immediate relief efforts of the “Thai Helps Thai” campaign, the ministry has prepared ongoing projects to support different sectors of the economy. For the long term, the ministry has prepared the Blue Flag Project to distribute affordable products continuously from March to August 2026. This extended timeline suggests a sustained effort to keep prices stable beyond the initial two-month push of the primary campaign.

the Green Flag Plus Project is aimed at reducing fertilizer costs for farmers during the planting season from May to July 2026. This agricultural support component acknowledges the link between production costs and consumer prices. By addressing input costs for farmers, the ministry intends to mitigate price increases at the source. Mr. Kornnit Nonjui, Inspector General and Deputy Spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce, announced these proactive measures to tackle the problem of expensive goods, as directed by Commerce Minister Mrs. Supajee Suthammanont.

The combination of immediate discounts, strict price controls, and long-term support projects outlines a multi-faceted approach to the current economic challenges. With daily inspections continuing and a dedicated hotline for complaints, the Ministry of Commerce has signaled a high level of engagement with market dynamics. The requirement for prior approval on price adjustments for key household items adds a layer of regulatory scrutiny intended to dampen inflationary spikes during the campaign period.
