Thailand Unveils $4.4 Billion Cash Handout: A Bold Move to Revive the Economy
Thai Government Approves $4.4 Billion in Cash Payments to Stimulate Economic Growth
The Thai Cabinet has approved a significant economic stimulus package, totaling 145.6 billion baht ($4.4 billion), to be distributed among 14.6 million people across the country.
The cash payments, which will be handed out starting September 25, will benefit 12.4 million government social security card holders and 2.15 million people with disabilities. Each recipient will receive 10,000 baht, with the payment process expected to be completed by the end of September, according to Finance Minister Pichai Chunhawajira.
Economic Growth and Revival Efforts
Thailand’s new Prime Minister, Phetong Than Shinawatra, has made reviving the economy a top priority. The country’s GDP has grown at a rate of about 2% per year over the past decade, significantly lower than neighboring Indonesia. The government expects the cash payments to boost Thailand’s GDP growth by 35 basis points this year.
Targeted Support for the Poorest Sections of Society
Unlike the previous government’s plan to provide benefits to about 45 million Thai adults through a digital wallet program, the new prime minister has decided to focus on supporting the poorest sections of society first. Benefits for other residents have been delayed until next year.
Economic Performance and Demographics
In the second quarter, Thailand’s economy grew by 2.3% compared to the same period in 2023. As of 2022, the country’s population was approximately 71.7 million, according to the World Bank.
