Thames Water Burst Main Causes Outage Across South London and Surrey

Approximately 6,000 properties across five south London boroughs and two Surrey boroughs experienced water supply outages or low pressure due to a burst water main in West Molesey, according to Thames Water. The company stated that specialist engineers were on site working to stop flooding from the broken pipe near Island Barn Reservoir.

The utility firm initially estimated that up to 15,000 homes might have been affected by the incident before scaling the figure down to 6,000 properties. Thames Water reported that it had rerouted water around the affected area, allowing customers in Surbiton to see their supply return shortly afterward, though with lower pressure than normal until repairs are completed.

Impacted Boroughs and Postcode Zones

Service interruptions were felt by residents located in various postcode districts spanning the London boroughs of Kingston upon Thames, Merton, Richmond upon Thames, Sutton, and Wandsworth, alongside the Surrey districts of Elmbridge and Spelthorne. Specific areas mentioned by the utility include Thames Ditton, East Molesey, and south-west London.

Thames Water listed specific postcodes that may be affected by the supply issues: CR4, KT1, KT10, KT12, KT2, KT3, KT5, KT6, KT7, KT8, SM4, SW16, SW17, SW18, SW19, SW20, TW10, and TW16. The company added that bottled water would be delivered directly to customers registered as water-dependent on its Priority Services Register.

Political Reactions and Infrastructure Concerns

Paul Kohler, Member of Parliament for Wimbledon, stated that he contacted Thames Water for more information after receiving reports of water outages across Wimbledon, New Malden, Raynes Park, and Morden. Monica Harding, Member of Parliament for Esher and Walton, called for an urgent response to restore supplies and protect vulnerable communities.

Once the water is flowing again, we need to establish exactly what happened and why. I am concerned that prolonged infrastructure underinvestment and inadequate oversight could be driving events of this nature. Right now, however, the priority must be getting water back in our taps.

Repair Timeline and Next Steps

Thames Water issued an apology for the disruption and confirmed that crews would remain on location until the repair work is finished.
