New Delhi: former US⁣ President Donald‌ Trump’s ⁢recent scathing remarks on the Indian‌ economy have not only sparked a diplomatic kerfuffle but also laid bare a meaningful rift within india’s opposition Congress party, particularly between⁢ Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor.Trump’s criticism, which labelled the‍ Indian economy as “dead,” has drawn starkly different⁣ responses from the two prominent Congress leaders, highlighting‍ their divergent approaches to national and international policy.

Gandhi’s Fiery Retort: “Dead Economy” and Adani Allegations

Rahul Gandhi seized upon trump’s comments, echoing the sentiment and directly accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of crippling the Indian economy to benefit industrialist Gautam Adani. “yes, he is ⁣right. Everybody knows this except the prime Minister and the Finance‌ Minister. The ‌Indian economy is a dead economy. I’m glad President Trump has stated a fact. The BJP has finished the economy to‍ help Adani,” Gandhi declared on Wednesday.

He further intensified his attack, alleging that Prime Minister Modi’s policies‌ are singularly focused on ⁤favouring Adani. “PM Modi works only for one person: ‌Adani.‍ This [India-US trade] deal will take place, and PM Modi will do exactly what Trump says. The government has destroyed⁤ our economy, defence and foreign policy,” Gandhi asserted,⁣ painting a⁣ grim picture of the nation’s economic and strategic standing under the current government.

Tharoor’s Measured diplomacy: Bargaining Tactic or Walk-Away Option?

In contrast, Shashi Tharoor adopted ⁤a more diplomatic stance, ‍refraining ‌from⁢ mirroring Gandhi’s sharp ⁤critique. On Thursday, Tharoor⁣ suggested that Trump’s tariffs could be a “bargaining tactic” within the ongoing ⁢trade‌ negotiations between the⁤ two nations. He⁢ urged for strong support for Indian negotiators to secure the best possible deal. “We must give strong support ‌to our negotiators to get the best possible deal,” Tharoor stated. However, he also cautioned that India should‍ be prepared to “walk away” if a favourable agreement cannot be reached.

Deepening Congress Divide: operation Sindoor ⁢and Party Loyalty

The‌ contrasting reactions from Gandhi and⁢ Tharoor come at a time of growing internal friction between Tharoor and the Congress leadership. This tension has ⁤been particularly evident following⁤ Tharoor’s ‍public endorsement of “Operation Sindoor,”‍ a military operation undertaken by the indian armed forces in retaliation for a terrorist attack. Tharoor’s consistent assertion ⁢that “nation comes before party” has set him apart from the party’s prevailing stance.

The chasm within⁤ the Congress widened further when the central‌ government appointed Tharoor to lead a delegation to the United⁤ states concerning Operation Sindoor, a move made without the Congress party’s direct⁢ nomination. Tharoor’s acceptance of this role‍ has‌ been ‍widely interpreted as a defiance of the ⁢party’s position,⁤ exacerbating⁣ the internal fissures.

Trump’s Tariffs: A ⁤Precursor to Trade‍ Tensions

Trump’s remarks, which have ignited a political storm in India, were ‌made shortly after the‌ US President announced a 25 percent tariff ‌on Indian imports. This was accompanied by a veiled threat of further penalties,⁢ specifically targeting India’s ⁤continued procurement of Russian crude oil and military equipment. The exchange ‍underscores the complex ‌geopolitical and economic landscape ⁢India is⁤ navigating, with internal⁤ political dynamics adding another layer of complexity.
