The Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, Austria, is proceeding under a cloud of unprecedented political tension, as five nations have boycotted the event in protest of Israel’s participation and conduct in Gaza.
While the production continues to feature high-energy spectacles including glitter, vocal gymnastics, on-stage flames, the organizers are struggling to maintain an apolitical, uncontroversial image for the competition.
The absence of the boycotting countries represents a significant shift in the contest’s landscape, as the list includes several established powerhouses. Ireland, which has won the seven-decade-old contest a record seven times—a feat tied only with Sweden—is among those staying home. The Netherlands, which has secured five wins, has also withdrawn.
The boycott also includes Iceland and Slovenia, as well as Spain. Spain’s absence is noted as particularly significant because the country is one of the Big Five main sponsors of the event, alongside France, Germany, Italy, and the U.K. Although Spain has only won the contest twice, its role as a primary sponsor carries substantial weight within the organization.
Competition Progress and Logistics
A total of 35 countries are participating in the Vienna competition this year. Following the conclusion of the semifinals held on Tuesday, May 12, and Thursday, May 14, ten countries have been eliminated from the running.
The remaining 25 countries will compete in the Grand Final on Saturday, May 16. Despite the perceived chaos of the performances, the event is described as being managed with extreme precision from a production logistics standpoint.
During the first semifinal on May 12, the Croatian band Lelek performed their entry, Andromeda, as part of the initial round of competition.
